Manager Richard Meyers.
Anticipating a negative reaction from the lo-
cal tennis community, Welker said that the City
was initially hesitant to adapt the Coiner Park ten-
nis courts for pickleball. However, the pickleball
court lines do not interfere with those of tennis.
“We have excellent courts here in Cottage
Grove, but fewer people around the country are
playing tennis than in the past,” said Welker.
Meyers said that pickleball courts will also be
introduced to the Armory.
With premier indoor and outdoor facilities,
Welker said there are no obstacles for a thriving
pickleball community in Cottage Grove.
A pickleball clinic will be held Thursday, July
2 at 5 p.m. at the Coiner Park tennis courts. Those
seeking more information may contact Ken Welk-
er at 541-999-5320.
Those interested in renting the City’s pickleball
equipment and using the Coiner Park court may
obtain a key at City Hall.

The club was started by Basting in the fall of
2011. Originally, there were just three students,
but word of the club began to spread and it soon
doubled in size. This year, 15 students were ac-
tively involved with the club.
“The club has certainly grown to attract a wide
variety of students,” Basting said. “Some will
come and go throughout the year because they are
involved with another sport, and there are quite a
few kids who don’t do anything else.”
The club meet at least every other week at

nearby trails including Whypass (Lorane), Brice
Creek and Crawfi sh. They’ve also ventured out on
day trips to Bend and Oakridge.
As of now there isn’t a competitive side to the
club, however some individual members have
raced in the Crawfi sh Classic, an annual race that
takes place near Dorena Lake.
Volunteer work is also an emphasis of the club;
Basting estimates that the group collectively put
in hundreds of hours this past year helping to
build and maintain riding trails.
“These trails don’t just appear out of nowhere.
We need to make sure we do our part,” Basting
said.
