Wood said that’s not always the
case.
“Is there a typical Magic
player? Not really,” he said. “A
year or so, I would have said
there was one, but not anymore.
It’s a large and growing demo-
graphic.”
The current tournament for-
mat allows more people to play
competitively and potentially
qualify for professional events,
Wood said, events that give more
players than ever the chance to
compete at a higher level.
“There are a lot of people
into playing Magic that are
brand-new,” said Delight own-
er Therese Nguyen. “It’s very
community based.”
Nguyen said that similarly
strong crowds show up at De-
light on Wednesdays to play an-
other trading-card game, Poke-
mon.
“We always have a room full
of kids,” she said.

The person called 911 and re-
ported seeing a blonde-haired
child inside the vehicle. The
child’s mother, Kaitlyne Wirth,
was not located at that time.
Tillamook Police Chief Terry
Wright said the car was located
on a side road just off Highway
99.
“The child was there with a
gentleman who appeared to be
under the infl uence of some kind
of drugs,” Wright said. “He was
not operating the vehicle and
was not able to give us much
useful information, but he was
in the area and could possibly
be criminally involved.”
On Monday, Wright said that
through additional investigation,
it appeared that Wirth was in
Portland and had not absconded
with the child herself.
“It looks like somebody else
had picked the child up and was
bringing the child to her,” he
said. “She was in Portland, and
they were going to meet in Cot-
tage Grove, but everyone was
aware that DHS (the Depart-
ment of Human Services) was
en route to pick up the child.
So it looks like there are more
people involved now.”
Wirth was arrested in Tilla-
mook after midnight the follow-
ing day, and Wright said police
still aren’t sure how she got back
to that city.

State law allows petitioners to gath-
er signatures for a referendum for 30
days after the passing of an ordinance,
which led to the May 13 deadline, and
signatures representing 10 percent of
the registered voters in Cottage Grove
would have to be gathered, putting the
number of required signatures at 478.
McNamara said petitioners hoped to
gather over 600 signatures in the event
that some would be ruled invalid, and
on Monday, Meyers said a prelimi-
nary count indicated that 554 signa-
tures had been turned in.
Some of those signatures may
be invalid, Meyers stated — at
least one page had been dated by its
petitioner prior to its signatures being
gathered, Meyers said, in violation of
election rules, and some signatures
may belong to voters who are not reg-
istered in Cottage Grove.
“There were some signatures from
outside the city limits,” Meyers said.
“The fi nal tally could be quite close.”
Lane County Elections has 10 days
to present the results of the petition-
ers’ efforts, though the offi ce is also
dealing with a May 19 election. Mey-
ers estimated that Cottage Grove may
know the results by Friday, May 22.
Wright said police were plan-
ning to execute a search warrant
on the Cavalier on Tuesday, in
addition to checking cell phone
records for clues as to others
who may be involved in the in-
cident. He said charges of custo-
dial interference could be levied
against multiple individuals if
others knew of a plot to take the
child, adding that conspiracy
and kidnapping charges are also
a possibility.
