May 2. Justin was named "King."
Lions raise $18K for the babies
On Saturday, May 2, Jus-
tin Bennett was crowned king
of the 21st annual Lion King
Pageant — the capstone of a
multi-month journey for eight
senior boys of Cottage Grove
High School to raise funds for
the Sacred Heart Neonatal Unit
and community awareness of
children’s health issues.
The Lion King contestants
— which in addition to Ben-
nett included his twin brother,
Luke, Jacob Eckstine, Spencer
Quimby, Jarett Raade, Cameron
Sandoval, Elijah Shanklin and
Kenny Thurman — raised near-
ly $18,000, which will be used
to purchase vital medical equip-
ment and supplies for treating
sick and injured infants.
Prior to the May 2 pageant,
the contestants spearheaded a
variety of fundraising efforts in-
cluding a penny drive at Latham
School, a student vs. staff bas-
ketball game, a car wash and a
family fun night carnival. They

tation to the Kiwanis Club and
offered babysitting services in
exchange for donations.
“After touring the NICU at
Sacred Heart Medical Center
and being born a twin, I felt
grateful that I was not born pre-
mature or with complications,”
said Justin Bennett, who plans
to pursue a career in health care.
“The pageant has really shown
me the diffi culties that others
have gone through, and how we,
as a community, can help them
overcome these diffi culties.”
