Take
authority
over your
enemy
I
went to church for years
and never heard about the
devil. It’s not fun talking about
him, and I don’t ever want to
put too much focus on him. But
the truth is, we have an enemy.
First Peter 5:8 says, “…That en-
emy of yours, the devil, roams
around like a lion roaring [in
fi erce hunger], seeking someone
to seize upon and devour.” It’s
important for us to believe in the
power and authority we have in
Christ over our enemy so we can
have the great life God wants us
to have.
There are so many Christians
who seem to be going through
their daily life just hoping they
can get through the day. They
go from one problem or crisis to
the next, and they lack a confi -
dent, bold faith in God that can
keep them stable and full of His
peace and joy in the diffi cult cir-
cumstances of life.
The good news is, God
doesn’t want us to live in the
emergency room of life all the
time. He wants us to get to the
point where we know what to
do to have a great life and take
responsibility for ourselves,
trusting we can do whatever we
need to do through the strength
we have in Christ (Philippians
4:13). This means we know
who we are in Christ and how to
walk in the authority we have as
believers in Jesus.
The truth about what you have
in Christ
John 10:10 tells us Jesus gave
His life so we can “have and
enjoy life, and have it in abun-
dance (to the full, till it over-
fl ows)” (AMP). When we accept
Christ as our Savior, we receive
the assurance of eternal life, but
we also become joint heirs with
Christ (Romans 8:17) and are
entitled to have everything He
is and everything He has: grace,
peace, righteousness, joy and
power and authority over the
enemy.
Matthew 10:1 says, “Jesus
summoned to Him His 12 dis-
ciples and gave them power and
authority over unclean spirits, to
drive them out, and to cure all
kinds of disease and all kinds of
weakness and infi rmity” (AMP).
This authority has been given to
every believer. It’s important to
understand that the devil has
power, but we have power and
authority in Christ. And our en-
emy only has the authority that
we give him. Many times we
give him the ability to attack us
through ignorance.

“Ed” Hiatt
On May 7, 2015 Ed Hiatt of Springfi eld passed
away surrounded by loved ones. He was born at
the McFarland Maternity Home in Cottage Grove
Oregon on December 8, 1942. His actual name
was George Edwin but everyone called him Ed or
Eddie. He grew up in Culp Creek OR attending
Culp Creek Elementary School and graduated from
Cottage Grove High School in 1961 where he played
basketball and football. Upon graduation his fi rst job
was at Bohemia Lumber Co. building logging roads
operating a 619 turn-pull, a large piece of machinery
for a young man just out of high school. Th at fall
he attended Shasta Junior College in Redding, CA.
where he made a life-changing decision to leave
school and do what he enjoyed operating heavy
equipment. He moved back to Cottage Grove and
worked for Elkside Lumber Co. operating yarders and shovels. He also served in the National
Guard. During that time he met and married Esther McKinney and they had three sons, Tad,
Stacy and Ross. To be nearer work he moved to Lakeside OR this also gave him the opportunity
to pursue his love of the outdoors fi shing and hunting which he could share with his sons. In 1981
Esther passed away aft er a valiant battle with leukemia. Later he moved to La Pine, OR where he
operated a self- loading logging truck. Aft er several years in Central Oregon he married Linda
Reid and moved to Springfi eld where he worked for Eugene Sand and Gravel. Aft er retiring, his
passion for fi shing became foremost. Nothing could be better than a day with his fi shing buddies
Vance Hird and Jim Bean in pursuit of those illusive steelhead, salmon, trout or kokanee. Also in
retirement he had a “hobby job” taking him all over the state driving a pilot car following trucks
hauling large concrete bridge beams. Other interests included being a football fan of the Oregon
Ducks, the 49’ers, Broncos and reluctantly the Seahawks. He called them “Seachickens” to tease
his sister! Ed was also a very accomplished bowler carrying a high average. Several times he came
within a pin of achieving that coveted 300-game. Of upmost importance in his life was his family.
He was so proud of his sons’ achievements whether it was starting a logging company, racing cars
or going to grad school. His grandchildren also brought him great joy and he loved attending their
sporting and academic activities. Two years ago he met Kathy Vasquez who was also been very
special in his life. Th ey enjoyed many wonderful times camping, traveling and just being together
as she so lovingly cared for him during his illness. Another great comfort was his companion Ziggy
a little Boston terrier who was always at his side. Ed will be remembered for always being ready
to help others, his easy going spirit, sense of humor, integrity and courage giving inspiration to
others as he faced a devastating illness. He will be missed greatly by his family and many friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents George and Billee Hiatt and his wives Esther and Linda.
Survivors include his three sons Tad and Stacy of Gold Beach OR and Ross of Blue Lake CA, six
grandchildren and his sister Ida Ashbridge (Dale) of Federal Way WA. At his requested no services
will be held.
