wild pitches, as Elmira cut
into the Lions’ lead with two
runs of its own.
In the second inning, Thoma-
son walked three consecutive
batters to load the bases. Brett
Ollivant had a chance to turn a
double play on Griffi n Meyer’s
grounder to second base, but
he bobbled the ball and one run
scored for Elmira.
Ollivant recovered to lead a
double play on the next at bat,
but still without any outs, Elmi-
ra scored another run to take the
lead. The Falcons scored once
more before the inning was
through on an error by Bellamy.
Cottage Grove responded in
the third inning when Tristan
Mihan hit a double to score
Hunter Harris and Bellamy.
While the Lions only trailed by
two at that point, Mihan said
that the early miscues had set an
ominous tone for the rest of the
game.

happens, it compounds on us
mentally. When those things
happen we need to be able to
move on,” he said.
Thomason’s day only got
worse in the top of the third. He
gave up three triples and three
runs, as the Falcons pushed their
lead up to 9-5.
After a scoreless fourth in-
ning, Harley Clarke hit a solo
homerun off of Mihan, who
came in for Thomason at the
start of the fi fth. Clarke went 3-
for-3 with three RBIs and came
within a single of hitting for the
cycle.
Cottage Grove coach Dan
Geiszler said that he considered
pulling Thomason before the
end of the fourth inning, but to
do so would have put the rest of
the pitching rotation in a bind.
“When we have our number
one pitcher going, we don’t
spend a lot of time planning for
who’s going to relieve him. We
have guys who are ready, but

Elmira starter Luke Brockman
struck out seven, walked fi ve and
gave up fi ve hits in fi ve innings
of work. After he hit Mihan to
lead off the sixth inning, the Fal-
cons brought in Matt Engholm,
who then walked the next two
batters to load the bases.
Back at the top of the order,
Brett Ollivant hit an RBI single
to left fi eld. And next, Payton
Presley hit a three-run double to
the left-fi eld fence. But Presley
— the game-tying run — was
picked off at second base for the
Lions fi rst out.
“A lot of little things went into
us losing that baseball game.
But when Payton got picked
off, I knew that was it,” Geiszler
said.
After the rough start, Eng-
holm recovered to strike out fi ve
of the next six batters.
“Matt’s one of those guys you
don’t read too much into [his
struggles],” said Elmira coach
Rick Royster. “Once in a while

Later that year, Wiltse placed
fourth in the nation in the 100-
yard breast stroke and was
named all-American.
During his junior year, Wil-
tse won an epic battle with
Sheldon’s Bob Van Fleet in the
100-yard breast stroke. His time
of 1:01.8 was the fastest time in
the district and the state and set a
new school record. He said this
this race stands out last one of
his all-time favorite memories.
Wiltse said that another fond
memory was at a team awards
banquet, when coach Bud Tay-
lor presented him with an alarm
clock to help him wake up for
morning practices.
Wiltse said that Taylor had an
incredible infl uence on his ca-
reer at Cottage Grove.
“Bud is a master motivator
and swim-meet strategist. His
teams consistently performed
beyond expectations. He helped
numerous high schoolers turn
their lives around by providing
consistent, caring and strict dis-
cipline, while also making the
sport fun,” he said.
Wiltse was also a 1974 state
all-star in water polo.
After high school, Wiltse at-
tended the University of South-
ern California, where he was a
member of the swim team from
1978-1980. He set school re-
cords in the 100 and 200 yard
breaststrokes and was named
all-American for the 100-yard
breaststroke and 4x100 yard
medley relay.
Wiltse ended his career at the
1980 U.S. Olympic Swimming
Trials, where he placed in the
top 30 in three events.
Wiltse went on to earn bach-
elors and masters degrees from
Azusa-Pacifi c University, and
he recently completed 30 years
of service in the Department of
Children and Family Services
of Los Angeles County. He lives
with his wife in Long Beach.
Hall-of-Fame preview will
continue in the May 6 issue.

After the Elmira game, the
Sky-Em had four teams in the
top-11 of the OSAA Power
Rankings; no other conference
had more than two. But as Cot-
tage Grove would lose tiebreak-
ers to Elmira and Sisters, the
Lions now fi nd themselves in
an unenviable position with two
weeks left in the season.
“Our backs are against the
wall, no doubt about it,” said
Geiszler. “We’re in a fi ght for
third and fourth in league. I
don’t think a league champion-
ship is out of sight, but that’s not
our worry right now.
Cottage Grove was scheduled
to play Sisters at home on Tues-
day for the third and fi nal time
this season. The Lions (12-6, 4-
4 Sky-Em) have two winnable
games against Sutherlin (2-16,
0-8 Sky-Em), at home on Friday,
and on the road on Monday.

“He looked great and really
attacked the fi rst 200,” Knutson
said of Howard.
Running in the 800 meters for
the fi rst time all season, Tyler
Ledford dusted the fi eld with a
2:06.94 — a top-fi ve time in the
Sky-Em.
Making his season debut,
Ryan Westerkamp threw 41-
01.5 in the shot out and 112-03
in the discus. Teammate Brad
Geisler won the latter event with
a mark of 114-03.
Other event winners included
Chris Clure (200 meters —
25.11) and Joshua Clafl in (High
jump — 5-04).
The girls edged Sweet Home
83-79, with Elmira fi nishing
way back with 13 points.
They also won eight events,
including a sweep of the middle
distances.
Halle Petersen and Jaylene
Forrester went 1-2 in the 1500
meters with times of 5:41.07
and 5:41.62, respectively. And
Hudson Weybright won the 800
(2:39.87) by a comfortable mar-
gin. Those three would team
with Chelsey Bottorff to cap the
day with a victory in the 4x400
meter relay (4:28.00).
In her season debut, Hannah
Albrecht won the 400 meters in
1:04.47, just ahead of teammate
Bottorff (1:05.46). Albrecht’s
time is the sixth-fastest in the
Sky-Em this year.
“It was just great to see her
out there,” Knutson said of Al-
brecht. He added that she will
likely add the 4x400, and either
the 100 or 200, to her work load
as long as a lingering knee issue
remains manageable.
Conner Borigo and Courtney
Hammel continued their domi-
nance in the throwing events.
Borigo took fi rst in the shot put
and came in second to Hammel
in the discus. Hammel also fi n-
ished third in the shot put.
Other event winners included
Celeste Pelham in the 100 meter
hurdles (18.15) and Sara Gard-
ner in the high jump (4-06).
Knutson said that the Falcons

Cottage Grove's Conner Borgio, shown competing at the

outstanding meet on Thursday, throwing 35-11.25 in the
