Victory Country Church has new home
BY CINDY WEELDREYER
Sentinel Faith Page Editor
F
or Pastor Barbara Dockery
and members of Victory
Country Church [VCC], it’s been
a long journey. Their 11-year-old
dream of having a more perma-
nent home has fi nally come true
with their recent move into the
former Free Methodist Church
last month.
Dockery said it was an easy
transition and adjustment from
the Cottage Grove Community
Center into their new location at
913 South Sixth St., which was
last occupied by HIS Church.
“We gratefully appreciated our
time at the community center and
made many fond memories there:
marriages, funerals and baptis-
mal services,” Dockery said. “We
had many guests who dropped
in, including tourists, who came
for city information and stayed
to enjoy our music, services and,
oh yes, our potlucks. Our city is
blessed to have such a wonderful
facility and staff to meet so many
varied needs.”
After 91 years, the church need-
ed to be refurbished and modern-
ized. On a tour of the building
Dockery proudly noted aspects
of the signifi cant improvements
made to meet their needs. VCC
members spent four months —
and many dollars — to remodel
the building fi rst constructed in
1921 with a larger sanctuary add-
ed in 1963.
“The
building
and
grounds are a landmark in our
community,” Dockery said. “We
stand in awe at the love, sacri-
fi ce and labor that was initially
invested in this edifi ce. Our goal
is to restore this beautiful House
of God to its original honor and
glory. With the interior now done,
our plans are to repaint the out-
side of the building and landscape
the grounds this summer.”
Born in Murphy, North Caroli-
na, Dockery’s traditional southern
accent is unmistakable. Her family
relocated to the Row River Valley
in 1951, where she began second
grade at the Culp Creek School.
In 1960, she met and began dat-
ing Harold Dockery. In 1963, she
graduated from Cottage Grove
High School and they married in
November. Today, they have one
daughter and six grandchildren.
Faith in God is a constant in
Dockery’s family. She began her
ministry at Evangel Temple (now
Family Praise Center) and worked
with every pastor of that church.
“In 1972, I accepted Jesus
Christ as my Lord and Savior and
received the baptism of the Holy
Spirit,” Dockery recalls. “I was
a three-week-old Christian when
my pastor asked me to teach the
Young Adult Sunday School
class, which I did for many years.
Soon after receiving my salvation
in Christ, I had a personal call to
lifelong ministry in a spiritual en-
counter with the Holy Spirit at the
Brumbaugh Cemetery. It’s been a
wonderful experience for me to
witness many miracles and see so
many lives changed through the
power of The Lord.”
In 2005, with many churches
moving toward a contemporary
style of worship, Dockery and
others saw a need to preserve
the more traditional-style service
highlighted by singing favorite
old gospel hymns.
Dockery describes VCC “as
timeless as the Gospel of Christ.”
She said they worship with old,
time-tested hymns and love the
life experiences that inspired
them. The choir and musicians
use a piano, guitars, banjo, man-
dolin, and occasionally other in-
struments “to make a joyful noise

nearly 11 years meeting in the CG Community Center,

tion in the former Free Methodist Church on South Sixth
Street.
unto The Lord as everyone joins
in.”
The church vision is to bring
people to Jesus, who will equip
them for this life and eternal life.
“In this day and age we live in,
with wars and rumors of war, with
job losses and the breakdown of
families and relationships, there
are so many who are lost, bro-
ken and hopeless,” Dockery ex-
plained. “We know and desire to
share with them The One who
can save, heal, deliver, give hope
and empower individuals for a
purposeful and abundant life as
we travel the path to Heaven. Fol-
lowing Jesus is a wonderful and
rewarding life.”
Dockery said their church doors
are open to welcome everyone and
to impact the community with the
same unconditional, unreserved
love and acceptance they have so
freely received.
Sunday services begin with
worship from 10-11 a.m. and Bib-
lically based teaching from 11
a.m. to noon. A dedication of the
renovated church is planned for
later this spring. For more infor-
mation call 541-915-0591.
