New Zealand's Suraj Singh (right) defeated Cottage Grove's Bryce Allen in Thursday's
freestyle tournament. For American wrestlers, collegiate is the most common style.
W RESTLING
Continued from 1B
and Ryan McCormick. Boitz
mentioned school, transporta-
tion and currency as some of
the more signifi cant contrasts
between the two countries.
McCormick observed that the
gun laws are strikingly more
liberal in the United States than
in New Zealand.
“Hosting the German team
while at Stayton was quite a bit
different because there was a
signifi cant language barrier and
many of the hosts weren’t sure
what to do with their guest,”
Temple said. “But this was a
lot easier. The kids were able to
have enlightening conversation
about their different experiences
as students and as athletes.”
The team also took part in a
number of non-wrestling ac-
tivities during their three-day
stay. On Wednesday they went
to Eugene’s trampoline park,
Get Air; on Friday, coach Bill
Thompson took the group to a
University of Oregon football
practice; they also went to Dam-
aged Ear Wrestling, a specialty
supply store in Eugene. As most
American brand-name prod-
ucts are expensive to acquire
overseas, many of the foreign
athletes bought as much gear as
their luggage could hold.
In New Zealand, where rugby
is the national pastime, wrestling
is not very popular. Temple esti-
mates that only 150 teenagers
in the entire country compete in
wrestling. However, the group’s
coach, Graemae Hawkins, who
competed at the 1984 Olympics
in Los Angeles, brings a passion
for the sport and for the cultural
opportunities it can offer.
The New Zealanders also
stayed in Roseburg and Bend
and will make stops in South-
ern California this week before
heading home.
Freestyle wrestling, which is
practiced throughout the world,
is primarily an off-season exer-
cise for American wrestlers, and
it offers some striking contrasts
to their more familiar colle-
giate style: the matches are two
rounds of three minutes each,
instead of three rounds of two
minutes each; the matches are
judged by three offi cials, as op-
posed to two; head gear is not
required and wrestlers are al-
lowed to use their entire body in
competition.
Cottage Grove wrestlers, as
well as their fellow Oregonians,
naturally struggled against their
more adept opponents in Thurs-
day’s tournament.
“I’ve only been to a few prac-
tices, so I wasn’t expecting it to
turn out very well for me,” said
Bryce Allen, who was pinned
by his opponent.
Boitz had similarly reason-
able expectations for his fi rst
freestyle competition.
“I think it’s fun, but some-
thing different that you have to
get used to,” he said.
The Oregon Wrestling Asso-
ciation (OWA) stages an annual
tournament to determine which
athletes will represent the state
abroad. Last summer’s group
traveled to New Zealand, and
the state was able to reciprocate
many of those hosts over the
past couple weeks.
A few weeks ago, Cottage
Grove’s Alan Bordeaux quali-
fi ed to be a part of the Oregon
team that will travel to South
Africa this summer. He is cur-
rently fundraising for the trip,
and those who are interested in
supporting Bordeux may con-
tact Temple at Kyle.Temple@
