Elks Lodge recognizes Fussell for six-plus decades of service
BY DAVE JOHNSON
CG Elks Lodge
T
he Cottage Grove Elks
Lodge No. 1904 recently
recognized Dale Fussell for his
64 years of dedicated service
within the organization. He
was awarded his 60-year pin
and given a plaque recognizing
his accomplishment.
Fussell joined the Benevolent
and Protective Order of Elks in
1948 in El Monte, Calif. Due
to paperwork mishaps his mem-
bership was not noted until
1951. He then moved about in
Southern California and became
a member of three succeeding
clubs; Monrovia, West Covina,
and fi nally Cottage Grove, in
1990.
When he was asked why he
joined the Elks, Fussell com-
mented that WWII had just end-
ed and he had just been released
from the U.S. Navy and he was
looking for some organization
to help him give back to his
community while at the same
time offering him the oppor-
tunity to “hang out” with guys
his own age. The “Elks was an
organization recognized for its
charitable activities as well as
support of veterans” Dale said.
He joined and enjoyed working
of many projects that supported
children, veterans and commu-
nity activities.
After retiring as a cabinet-
maker, Dale and his wife Betty
moved to Cottage Grove in
1990. On his arrival in Cottage
Grove he transferred his mem-
bership and began to help the
local lodge in activities such as
student scholarships, children’s
eye care, veteran’s programs
and community improvements.
He also joined the Prospector’s
and the Moose and helped in
other community projects.
It has been noted that Dale
seems to be a commitment type
of person. He was married to
Betty for over 67 years before
her passing, was a cabinetmaker
for over 40 years, and an active
Elk for over 60 years. When
asked what the best thing about
his time here in the Cottage
Grove Lodge has been, he com-
mented; “it’s a home away from
home. I’ve made friends who
care about me, my family and
my health. The members are
friendly and supportive and I try

to give back to others that same
hospitality. I love the charity
work and community projects
and help out as my health al-
lows me.”

love seeing him arriving in his

oke or attend meetings. He is
a well-respected member of the
