Campaign against
digger squirrel to get
underway soon.
The annual campaign against
gray digger ground squirrels will be
carried on in all parts of Lane Coun-
ty this year as usual according to
O.S. Fletcher, county agent. Poison
Barley prepared by the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service cooperating
with the county agent’s offi ce will
be on sale by dealers throughout
the county at the usual price. The
county agent states that with farm-
ers making every effort to increase
production to meet the demands for
increase in food supplies, it is more
important than ever that a thorough
campaign against squirrels be car-
ried out in all parts of the county.
Elsewhere in this issue is a legal
notice to all persons owning or ha-
vening dominion over land requir-
ing them to exterminate squirrels
on their premises within 30 days.
Under Oregon law supervisors ap-
pointed by the county court will
have authority to go upon neglected
land and poison squirrels at the ex-
pense of the owner if the owner fails
to take care of them.
Dealers in Cottage Grove and
tributary areas who are cooperat-
ing with the county agent’s offi ce
and sell poison barley are as fol-
lows: Bedler’s Feed and Seed Store,
Grove; Farmer’s Union Store, Ad-
dison’s Store, Lorane; Farmer’s Ex-
change, Creswell.

Complainant reported that a
neighbor’s mailbox had been tam-
pered with but did not know if any
mail was missing. The complainant
was adamant about not being con-
tacted but demanded more patrol
through the area.

A reporting person said a 16-
year-old male had taken a hard hit
at fi rst base and required medical
attention.

Local girl named to
sunbeam fi nals
Terrill Lynn Howard of Cottage
Grove is one of four regional win-
ners of the 1955 Miss Sunbeam
contest, according to E.D. David-
son, manager of Davidson Baking
Company in Eugene, sponsors of
the contest in the Eugene-Roseburg
area.
Picked for their resemblance to
the Miss Sunbeam picture on Da-
vidson’s Sunbeam bread, the girls’
pictures will appear on ballot boxes
in grocery stores throughout Eu-
gene, Cottage Grove and Roseburg
areas.
Terrill’s picture appears over the
letter “B”, and all localities are
urged to place votes for Cottage
Grove’s entrant. The winner will
represent Oregon in the fi nal selec-
tion of 1955 Miss Sunbeam for the
United States.
Over 1,600 girls from Oregon and
southern Washington entered the
contest. Honorable mention certifi -
cates have been sent to all entrants.
The Davidson Baking Company
also has invited all participants to
an open house party at the bakery.
Thirty-six thousand dollars in
prizes will be awarded to the lucky
winner. Besides the all-expense
paid vacation to Europe, Miss Sun-
beam 1955 and her runners-up will
receive a list of prizes, which in-
cludes a $1,500 wardrobe.

Disturbance, Axe and Fiddle
There were two subjects throwing
rocks at the Woodard Building and
Old City Hall. An area check was
negative and there was no damage
to the buildings.
A reporting person said that a
female at the location was causing
a scene and refusing to leave. The
subject was arrested for criminal
trespassing.

Suspicious subject, Parks Ave
A caller said that the subject was
currently in the store and was wear-
ing a black coat and hoody, and had
a red backpack. After leaving the
store, offi cers contacted the suspect
at an apartment on Gateway Blvd.
After a short standoff, the sus-
pect was brought into custody for
a CGPD circuit court warrant for
theft.
Caller said he saw a younger
adult male trying to break into ve-
hicles along Parks Ave. The caller
chased off the subject, who was last
seen wearing a black hoody and
black jeans, and heading westbound
on Parks. A check in the area was
negative and nothing appeared to be
taken from any vehicle.

Offi cers were on standby for an
intoxicated male who rode his bike
into a ditch; he was unconscious but
breathing.

Dispatch received multiple re-
ports of a naked male walking,
sitting or laying on Highway 99.
Offi cers contacted the suspect and
detained him until Oregon State
Troopers could arrive. He was then
transferred to the Johnson unit.

orane families — there is another evening
planned this Sunday, March 29 with a
square dance/barn dance at Lorane Grange with
Chris Booher and others playing while Woody
Lane calls. All the fun begins at 5 p.m. going un-
til 8 p.m. This is open to all and only a suggested
$10 donation per family. A fi nger food potluck is
planned for a 6 p.m. break; afterward the dancing
and fun resume. If you have never heard these
men play, believe me, it’s worth it just to sit and
listen! The square dancing is a bonus.
Tonight, March 25, is the Papa’s Pizza on Co-
burg Road fundraiser for Ashley Clark’s medical
fund. She is the older sister of two Crow students.
The fl yer can be downloaded from the Crow Dis-
trict site, or there a few fl yers at the Lorane Fam-
ily store. You must bring the fl yer with you. It’s
good for the whole day! School resumes on
March 30. Have a fun, safe Spring Break.
A special congratulations to Crow High School
for its recognition in the Fern Ridge Review by
the Oregon Country Fair as a recipient of the an-
nual “Leslie Scott Imagine Award”. Congrats to
the school and their teacher, Tina Dworakowski,
an amazing art teacher, for inspiring creativity
and enriching the students.
Crow Middle/High School is still looking for
someone to write about the school events and ac-
tivities for the Fern Ridge Review. Those inter-

CAL School District is still looking for a
budget seat member for two or three meetings
throughout April and May. If interested, call Lee

The City Manager met with
Mike Ripley from Mudslinger
Events to discuss preparations
for the 2015 Oregon Gran
Fondo, which will be the fi rst
leg of the Oregon Triple Crown
and will be held on Sunday,
May 31. Last year the event
brought 440 bicyclists to the
community to ride one of the
three rides. This year atten-
dance is expected to break 500.
A Gran Fondo is not a race,
but rather a mass start bike ride
meant to draw the community
together and give everyone a
chance to enjoy the fun of rid-
ing a bike on the same course
as the pros.

P.E. class to Middlefi eld Golf
Course for some Soccer Golf
this week. The students report-
edly all had a great time learn-
ing the “new” sport of Soccer
Golf, which is played like
traditional golf, but with soccer
balls and larger holes.)
Everyone is welcome to come
enjoy $1 soccer golf through
April at Middlefi eld Golf
Course.

poral Ron Bates resigned from
the Police Department effective
March 15; however, he will
continue as a Reserve Offi cer
for the Police Department.

2015 Coordinated
Population Project
The Community Development
Director attended the Regional
Population Forecast Meeting
held by Portland State Univer-
sity Population Research Cen-
ter to review and discuss the
preliminary population forecast
for Cottage Grove. Prior to
2013, counties were respon-
sible for preparing coordinated
population fi gures. These
fi gures are used in grant and
infrastructure loan applications
and various planning docu-
ments that require population
forecasts for a 20-year period.
The last study by Lane County
was in 2009. In 2013 the State
Legislature changed the process
and designated the Population
Research Center at Portland
State University (PSU) as the
body to undertake the popula-
tion forecasting using the same
methodology statewide.
The program is expected to
provide coordinated forecasts
with a 50-year forecast horizon
for Oregon counties and cities
no less than once every four
years.
Since 2014 staff has been work-
ing with PSU to prepare the
2015 Preliminary Population
Forecast numbers that will be
offi cially released on March 31,
2015.

The Cottage Grove City Coun-
cil will hold a public hearing
to consider a Zone Change for
property located on the south
side of Birch Avenue 100 feet
west of Q Street, on Monday,
April 13 in the Council Cham-
bers at 7 p.m. The proposal is
to rezone the 0.63 acre parcel
from County RR Rural Resi-
dential to City R-2 Multi-Fam-
ily Residential. The Planning
Commission recommendation,
meeting minutes, and staff
report will be provided prior to
the public hearing.
