“The Body of Christ” is this year’s
Lenten theme at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Lent is the season before Easter to re-
member Jesus’ passion and death. This
six-week series considers seriously our
Lord’s humanity, the human body in
which he wrought our salvation. Week
by week, the congregation will focus on
a different aspect of Christ’s body: feet,
eyes, hands, mouth, ears and heart. The
weekly services offer a soup supper at
6 p.m. with the service at 7 p.m. All are
invited. Trinity Lutheran is “the brown
church” located on the corner of 6th and
Quincy. Call 541-942-2373 for more
info.

Cottage Grove’s Seventh-Day
Adventist Church [SDA] across from
Harrison School is a familiar one fea-
turing encouraging words for a fast-
paced society. Its Community Service
Center has provisioned many families
since it began just after World War II
ended. The Center refl ects church
emphasis on honoring God, blessing
others, a commitment to healthy eat-
ing and the prevention of hunger.
A Canyonville native, Pastor Kevin
Miller and his family relocated here
from Montana in October of 2010.
He serves both the Cottage Grove
and Yoncalla churches on alternating
Saturdays. As a former Eugene pas-
tor, his familiarity with the commu-
nity was merely the McDonalds and
Walmart.
“We love living in Cottage Grove,”
Miller said. “Our town is blessed with
friendly caring people and with a
wide variety of family-friendly events
and activities to enjoy.”
A Protestant, Christian denomi-
nation, the Seventh-day Adventist
Church grew out of the world-wide
religious revival in the mid-19th cen-
tury. People of many religious persua-
sions believed Bible prophecies indi-
cated the second coming or advent of
Christ was imminent. When Christ
did not come in the 1840s, a group
of disappointed American Adven-
tists continued their Bible studies and
concluded they misinterpreted pro-
phetic events and the second coming
of Christ was still in the future. The
Church organized formally in 1863
and began its mission to the world.
“We view the Sabbath not as a law

Grove and Yoncalla Adventist Churches with the support of his
wife Carrie and son Wyatt.
to be observed but a gift to be experi-
enced. It’s more than a physical rest;
it involves the whole person. There is
a connection between Creation and
Christ’s redemption that is found from
Genesis to Revelation,” Miller said.
“We believe we are saved by grace
through Christ, not by our works.”
Education that includes Biblical in-
struction has been a hallmark for Ad-
ventists with families sacrifi cing to
send their children to private Adven-
tists schools. With more than 7,800
schools worldwide, the church oper-
ates the second-largest global school
system.
The local history book, “Golden
Was The Past,” records Adventist
pioneers arriving here in 1887 from
Minnesota and establishing the Royal
Academy in the Silk Creek Valley.
The 12-grade academy attracted stu-
dents from as far away as Washington
and Idaho. Deep mud made traveling
diffi cult for much of the year. This
led to the construction of the Victo-
rian-era church on the corner of West
Main and South ‘M’ Streets.
Adventists experienced growing
pains in the 1950s. In March of 1950,
the two congregations merged and
built the current building at 820 South
10th Street. Their Main Street build-
ing was sold to the Episcopalians,
who continue to worship there.
On Sept. 14, 1950, a new school
opened on North River Road with 26
students. Today that building is home
to the Great Days Learning Center.
Since the closure of their school, lo-
cal Adventists students now travel to
Pleasant Hill to attend Emerald Chris-
tian Academy.
Adventists accept the Bible as the
only source of their belief. The obser-
vance of the Seventh-Day Sabbath,
and a respect for the teachings of
an early church leader, Ellen White,
have led some to label the denomina-
tion a cult. Miller noted the Sabbath
message on the I-5 billboard south
of Eugene has no connection to local
Adventists churches.
“In the mid-1800s, Joseph Bates
fi rst introduced James and Ellen
White to a Seventh-Day Sabbath and
an emphasis on maintaining a healthy
spiritual and physical lifestyle,” Mill-
er explained. “Ellen White preferred
to be called a messenger of God, not a
prophet, and was clear that Scripture
stands alone as the authority by which
everyone’s works will be judged.
Cults follow one leader. In our histo-
ry we have group of individuals who
carefully studied the Scriptures and
shaped the beliefs of our church.”
Sabbath School begins at 9:20 a.m.
on Saturday followed by worship at
10:45 a.m. Bible study is important to
Adventists. A home group meets on
Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. to share a meal
and study. On Wednesdays at 12:30
p.m. the church hosts a soup and sal-
ad lunch followed by a Bible Study.
Special events include concerts and
guest speakers, an Eager Beaver Club
for children 5-8-years old, and cloth-
ing and food giveaways.
