Future is bright for Lions' chess team

so this was my time to shine,” Stewart
said.
While the Lions were hoping for a
better fi nish after their hot start, coach
Kevin Carver said that it was a good
experience for his young squad. Only
Stewart will not be back next year.
"It's never easy to get knocked out,
but that can happen at the state tour-
nament when other teams get hot," he
said.
After fi nishing the qualifying
rounds in 12th place, the boys went
two-matches-and-out. The Lions lost
to Centennial in the fi rst round, 362-
356, and they were bounced by Or-
egon City in the consolation bracket,
377-375. In the latter match, Cottage
Grove nearly overcame a 45-pin defi -
cit from the fi rst game but was sty-
mied by a pocket split in the seventh
frame of the second game.
“We were right where we wanted
to be, and I am very proud of how the
kids competed,” said Cottage Grove
coach Ernie Owen.
With hopes of fi nishing in the top-
fi ve, Owen said the Lions did not help
their case by fi nishing in the bottom
half of qualifying, but some of that
was due to the unfamiliar venue and
just plain bad luck.
Owen said that it was a frustrating
experience for his team, especially
for seniors Austin Renfro and Zach
Thomason.
“They worked so hard to get back
to the state tournament, and for that
goal to disappear so quickly was very
disappointing for them,” he said.
Although Renfro and Thomason
will surely be missed, the future is
bright with young talent: freshman
Josh Allen, Chandler Bascue and Jar-
ed Simmons gained valuable experi-
ence this year; current eighth graders
Chris Allen and Jayden Arnold could
also factor in to next year’s lineup.
Renfro and Stewart will compete
at the state’s All-Star Tournament
March 7-8 at Pinbusterz Lanes in
Portland.

he Cottage Grove High School
varsity chess team fi nished its
season with a match record of 3-5 and
tied for sixth place in the Midwestern
League.
On Jan. 21, the Lions beat Creswell
3-2 with wins from Chris Glesmann,
Spencer Falk and Justin Long. It was
Long’s fi rst victory of the season.
Cottage Grove then lost to Pleasant
Hill 4-1 on Jan. 28. Falk came from be-
hind to make his opponent resign under
great time pressure for the Lions’ only
game victory.
The fi nal match of the regular season
ended in defeat against league co-cham-
pion South Eugene. Falk again scored a
win for Cottage Grove and fi nished his
season with just one loss. Long earned
a draw against his opponent.
In the high school division of the post-
season tournament held on Saturday
at WIllamette H.S., out of 12 players,
Henry Lancaster took fi rst place with
no losses, and Chris Glesmann tied for
second, losing only to Lancaster.

men who gained important experience
and skill this season, the future is bright
for Cottage Grove. Alex Istudor of Lin-
coln Middle School played well at the
junior varsity level and is expected to
move up to varsity next season.

“This one came from within,” said
Hopkins. “The losing was getting to us;
we wanted to win this game really bad,
and we pulled through.”
Cottage Grove scored over 60 points
for the fi rst time since Jan. 2 and shot
46-percent from the fi eld as a team. But
the defense was just as potent. After
scoring 20 points in their fi rst meeting,
the Lions held Hunter Jutte to just
nine points. They also outrebounded
Sweet Home, 34-29.
It’s been quite some time since
Cottage Grove has struggled so
mightily in conference, but its team
has also never been so youthful. Pol-
lard said that the season began to
snowball when a couple close losses
in mid January were followed up by
a series of blowouts. But with ev-
eryone expected to return, Pollard
said he saw a lot of progress over the
season, and that bodes well for next
year.
With spring sports on the horizon,
however, it will be a while until the en-
tire team is back together. Hopkins said
that in the meantime they will have to
work on their games separately.
“We have to trust each other to keep
getting better as individuals because
that will help make us a better team,”
he said.

drove into the paint, drew a double-
team and found Chance Hopkins un-
derneath for an easy layup at the buzzer
that put the Lions ahead 37-26.
Hopkins, who recorded a double-
double with 10 points and 10 rebounds,
said that play was a great example of
the type of ball movement Cottage
Grove will need to demonstrate more
consistently in the future.
After going 0-for-7 from the fi eld in
the third quarter, Sweet Home exploded
for 21 points in the fourth quarter. A 3-
pointer by Adams with 2:15 remain-
ing cut what had been a 17-point lead
down to four. But Parent, who tallied 18
points, converted on 5-of-6 free-throw
attempts down the stretch to help put
