state tournament.
“With two freshman moving into the
lineup, we were very green, and we
started out a bit slower than normal,”
he said.
But during their third tournament of
the season, Carver learned something
very important about these Lions: they
thrive on challenges.
“The girls were kind of ho-hum
about competing, so we told them if
they won we’d pay to go mini golf. And
it worked,” he said.
Since that point, Cottage Grove has
been on fi re. The Lions won three of
their fi nal four tournaments, including
the District 4 championship in which
they defeated North Bend by a mere 10
pins.
Despite some very talented groups
in the past, it was the fi rst time Cottage
Grove won the district tournament. And
to do so the Lions had to overcome old
rivals North Bend and Springfi eld.
Gracie Stewart said that the victory
brought a new level of confi dence to
Cottage Grove and answered some
questions that she had about her team-
mates going into the season.
“With so many seniors graduating
I expected things to be a lot different.
Some of our up-and-comers had never
bowled varsity before, and I knew that

March 7-8 in Portland.
“I had been getting pretty hard on
myself,” Renfro said of his past two
seasons. “So it really helped to focus
more on the team instead of on my own
game.”
Renfro added that it has been very
helpful to have the core of last year’s
team back and he has noticed a greater
sense of confi dence among them.
However, just like in 2012, the team’s
success could come down to a fresh-
man: Chandler Bascue has been shoot-
ing over 70-percent on the season, and
Owen said he is “as cool as a cucum-
ber” under pressure.
“He may not be a strike shooter yet
but he picks up every spare,” Owen
said.
Needing to replace the majority of
last year’s team that placed third at
state, the girls had more than a few
question marks heading into this sea-
son. And for a while, coach Kevin
Carver didn’t know if the Lions would
make their fi fth consecutive trip to the

ment.
teams like North Bend and Springfi eld,
who had a lot of returners, could put
pressure on young bowlers,” she said.
Stewart — the only senior on the
team — has been the building block of
Carver’s program and he said that she
has been a natural leader of the young
group.
“In the beginning we were pretty sep-
arated. But as we started to bond more
around the tournament weekends, we
became closer friends and then we be-
came closer teammates,” Stewart said.
While Stewart is the fi rst in school
history to qualify for four state tour-
naments, she isn’t Cottage Grove's
only high-powered bowler; Kim Smith
joined her on this year’s district all-star
team. And that depth is part of what
makes Carver cautiously optimistic
heading into the weekend.
“If all goes right, I believe we can
compete for the state title. But experi-
ence tells me that all it takes is a slip
here and slip there to fall out of conten-
tion,” he said.
The state tournament for both the
boys and girls begins Saturday and will
be held at the AMF Firebird Lanes in
Salem. Teams will complete 30 Baker
format games of qualifying before
starting the 16-team, double-elimina-
tion tournament on Sunday.
W RESTLING

“I was hoping to win my
[third-place] match but it's been
my goal all season long to get to
state, so I feel pretty good about
that,” said Lamb, a freshman,
who placed fourth on Saturday.
Both Allen and Herbert lost
in the semifi nals before pinning
their opponents in third place
matches. Farrell had to defeat
teammate Beaux Crawford in a
wrestle-back for fourth place.
“Before the season, I was
hoping we’d get four kids to the
state tournament, and to end up
with six was pretty good,” Tem-
ple said.

three qualifi ers and fi nished
22nd at state. Temple believes
that his crew has what it takes to
fi nish in the top 10, but fi rst they
will need to manage the two-
week layoff from competition.
“We’re in uncharted terri-
tory now because historically
there has only been one week
in between regionals and the 4A
tournament,” he said.
Temple said that he hasn’t yet
mapped out the next two weeks,
but rest will be a top priority.
“These guys haven’t had two
days in a row off since Christ-
mas, so we may not do anything
until Wednesday,” he said.
As a team, Cottage Grove was
on par for expectations with a
fi fth-place fi nish in the regional
tournament. Sweet Home domi-
nated the competition with 359
points, and Cascade was second
with 311.
Many of the teams above the
Lions are senior-heavy, and
Temple hopes that fact sunk in
for his young squad, which will
only lose Herbert to graduation
this year.
“I don’t want to predict any
thing, but if our guys wrestle
how they should then we can
be right up there with everyone
else. And it’s important for them
to know they have that ability,”
he said.
