Farm machinery
classes offer free
instructions
Any farmer, whether part
time or full time, has a won-
derful chance to save himself
some money by having his farm
machinery repaired at the farm
machinery repair class now be-
ing conducted in Cottage Grove
by the vocational agriculture
department of the high school
and instructed by H. A. Hein
of the Jensen Implement Co. of
Eugene. These classes meet on
Tuesday and Friday nights from
7:30 till 10:30 p.m. in the can-
nery building at Cottage Grove
and each farmer will fi nd all the
necessary tools including hand
tools, an electric drill, acety-
lene welding outfi t, an electric
welding outfi t, a bench grinder,
a sickle grinder, and other tools
necessary for minor and major
repair jobs on tractors, trucks,
plows, mowers, separators,
combines, harrows, binders,
cultivators, drags and other farm
machinery.
These classes are free to farm-
ers of Southern Lane county and
increased attendance is request-
ed to make suffi cient enrollment
to justify continuing the classes
at present set up. Any farmer
wishing to know more relative
to these classes may call Donald
Kabler, vocational agriculture
instructor at the high school
or at his residence in Cottage
Grove.

Area builders
pleased with year’s
activity
As far as Cottage Grove’s
builders are concerned, 1974
was a “good year,” and they
aren’t surprised that the total
dollar volume fi gure for con-
struction in the city reached the
$1.7 million mark.
G.R. “Bud” Wright, an in-
dependent builder, voiced the
opinion of area builders Tues-
day night when he summed up
his own situation during 1974.
“I stayed busy all year long,” he
said. “I’m fi ve or six houses be-
hind right now.”
Carl Rich, owner of Cottage
Grove Construction Company,
agreed, with one condition.
“Generally speaking, building
locally was good but primar-
ily in residentials,” he said. “ I
don’t think the commercial end
was as strong as it has been in
the past.”
Mr. Rich said his fi rm, which
specializes in commercial work,
did more residential work than
usual during the past 12 months.
The local builder said he thought
high prices and high interest
costs were factors in the com-
mercial lull.
Clifford Herman, building un-
der the name Herman and Sons,
was less enthusiastic than other
builders but reported no prob-
lems. “It was an average year,”
he said. “There wasn’t anything
special about it.”
Mr. Herman noted that the
“average person” isn’t able to
purchase a house anymore be-
cause of the high interest costs.
