Common Sense
There must be no lettiug up on the part o f any
of us— man or woman— to keep business at its
best. Money must be kept in circula
tion; our national success depends upon
it. There must be no hysterical, mis
guided retrenchment, masquerading un
der the cloak o f economy in any home.
The nation calls for the support o f all
— every individual in if— to do his part
to keep business booming.
The press of the entire country voices
the above sentiments. We reproduce
one editorial that is typical of them tell.
It is from the St. Louis Globe Democrat.
Read it.
BUSINESS MUST GO ON.
***** There is a reason for the ap
peals that are going out from the go v
ernment and other sources, for unless
we conserve our products of the fields
we shall suffer consequences that will
be unpleasant to some anil most dis
tressing to many, while the cause for
which we are battling will be impeded.
" B u t all this is not tliat we sliall sav e
our money, but taut we snail nusbaud
our natural resources. The notion that
our economics stiould extend to every
thing, tliat Wo stiould cease to buy any-
tUing but the necessities of lite, and
be mighty frugal with them, is not only
mischievous but dangerous. For it is
of the utmost importance to every ele
uient of the population that business
shall go on. ii ia l hi wore essential to
the poor than to the rich, t here can be
no s e l l i n g where there is uo buying, and
when selling ceases uiauulacture must
ol necessity stop.
‘ ‘ The business o f a nation la the life
of a nation and ft la even more essential
that it be fostered in war than in peace,
for out of it there must come not only
the sustenance of the people but the
stnewa of war aa well.
" T h e United States has more money
than it ever had before, more than any
country has ever had, nut its value is
in ite use. We must not get the idea
that we should hoard il in banks and
live the lives o f anchorites until the
storm blowa over. Those who can a f
ford to spend should continue to spend
us their needs require or their desires
impel, for it is only by spending that
the money of the country can be kept
in circulation and give vitality to in
dustry.
"Extravagance is never to be en
couraged, but drastie retrenchment
along all lines would do vastly more
harm than good at this tim e ."

‘ Serve the nation” — that's the call to every one.
‘ Keep business humming for your country 's sak.\” is the slogan.
As long as we are prospering we can pay our enormous war costs ami have enough left to help our al
lies, but— if we do not prosper— if business halts— if money is hourded through false economy or fear—
then, and then only, will we be hard pressed.
In his momentous message to Ins country, President Wilson sounded a mighty appeal to all stores to
T H IS store and to all patriotic citizens to Y O l ’ to do their part to keep business humming
E V E R Y ONE IS GOING TO DO T H E IR ‘ B I T ,” A N D T H E R E IS MUCH TO

To do their part to keep money in circulation is the
first duty of every real patriot. This store will do
its share. Business will continue with us as t h o u g h
conditions were normal. W e shall strain every effort
to eliminate waste and reach the highest point of
efficiency. President Wilson‘s words, " Low profits
and quick service,” have been made a fact here.

Yo u ’ ve no idea the comfort in on :• of
these light Italian straw huts, during
these warm days, until you have tried

These new Italian straws are

T he nation’s sensible patriotic piogiam calls for
elimination of waste and extravagance, but not for a
lowering of our living standards. You personally
play a most important part, for upon the individual
depends whether we go on to prosperity the most
important thing at present or otherwise. The nn
I on's success depends largely on whether you and
I, the individuals, keep up our normal purchases.
