The mention o f an agricultural col
lege to the average city msn conjures
up visions o f tall, lankv farmer boys,
in corduroys and high boots, bending
over books, to learn how to grow more
grain to the acre, and how to make the
cows give more rnilk.
To such we advise a visit to Cor
vallis, to the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege.
The w riter visited the O. A. C. last
week and came away amazed that such
a wonderful institution, accomplishing
aa it does, auch a tremendous amount
o f good, is so little known and under
stood.
A rriving at Corvallis, a beautiful
city of 5WX) population, our train as it
rolled into the station was greeted by
college yells from two or three hun
dred leather-lunged students, who were
at the depot to greet the O. A . C.
basket ball team returning home from
a game at Eugene.

a broad, green campus, dotted here
and there with dignified, substantial
buildings.
The O. A. C., even to the causual
observer, is certainly doing wonderful
work. The hundreds o f bright, clean-
cut young men and women seen in the
various class rooms and on the campus,
each with the air o f being there for
business; the sympathy given the stu
dents by instructors and professors ;
the esprit which pervades the entire
institution from top to bottom, make
one wiah that our achool days could
return again, so that we could go to
Corvallis and spend four years among
auch environments and start anew,
equipped with the training that is sure
to make better men and women o f all
who receive it.
The purpose o f the school is to pro
vide a liberal, thorough and practical
education, one that w ill fit the student
for the problems he w ill have to cope
with when he has passed through the
college and takes up his chosen field.
The work o f this splendid institution,
which has grown to its dominating po
sition in the educational work o f the
state under the brilliant leadership o f
its president, Mr. Kerr, is planned to
train the mind, the eye and the hand
to act in unison, and in the words of
the catalogue issued by the college,
" t o develop a symetrical manhood and
womanhood, and a just appreciation of
clean, upright citizen ship."

hall ; agricultural hall; dairy build

building ; Waldo Hall, the young wo
man’s dorm itory; Cauthorn Hall, the

buildings, all harmonizing in general
arrangement, the splendid campus

Besides the fruit growing the berry
industry is flourishing and gives
promise o f being a very profitable busi
ness and more berries have been set
out the past year than ever before and
more would have been planted only for
the scarcity o f plants. Nearly all com
mercial varieties can be grown here.
A number o f orchardists find it well
to plant berries between the trees, thus
gettin g revenue from their land while
waiting for the trees to ge t intt bear
ing.
The cannery, which is to be equipped
and in operation this season, is a source
o f great encouragement to fruit and
berry growers. It gives them a chance
to dispose o f their crops at the best
market prices and to grow berries on a
larger scale.
In this way people are in much bet
ter circumstances than by owning
larger ranches. It does not require the
time nor so* much money to raise a
crop on these small tracts and with the
cannery to care for it and market it, it
ia a paying investment to both the
