The fo llo w in g fa cte in regard to their d esira b ility are from the report o f the cruise made b y Dennis M cCarthy, which waa com pleted about throe years ago, and fro m th e records in the assessor’s office; The tota l number o f acres at th e Oregon 4 C aliforn ia railroad land grant in Cooa county is 121,000 and in 1914 this was assessed fu r $1,840,- 591, or s t th e ra te o f $ 1 L M pee acre. Probably the ip a jer p a rt o f this as sessment, how ever, w as on th e tim ber these lands carried ra th er than on the land them eetyes- Mr. M cCarthy classified these lands as follows: Lands suitable fo r agricu ltu ral pur poses a fte r th e tim ber and brush are removed, 11,240 acres. Lands su itable fo r g ra zin g a fte r Lands m ore or lose rocky, 19,480. F igu rin g th is in percentages, m find that the proportion o f these land. fit fo r fa n n in g a fte r th ey h ave beei cleared is on ly a little o ver 9 pei cent o f the tota l. Preonm ably th< most o f this agricu ltu ral land is no* covered w ith tim ber and therefor« cannot bo opened fo r settlem en t unti it has been logged o ff. So it la p reb able that little i f any m ore than tw< per cent w ill be open to en try ai lends, all o f which lie east o f a lin e drawn through G ravel F ord , a re s till covered w ith tim ber. A s to the 19,840 a c n e “ m ore o r less rocky,” i f th ere is an eig h ty in it a l ready cleared and th a t any one could possibly support h im self upon, w e are greatly In this connection, how ever, it seems w orth w h ile to re v e rt to the Coos B ey W agon Road g ra n t lamia, which w ill, w ithout doubt, be disposed of under rules sim ilar to those pro vided fo r the O. 4 C. lands, but a t a later date. These lands com prise 69,884 acres running in a broad strip across the county from the Doughlas county line to Coos Bey. T h ey w ere a ll selected before the railroad lends, w h ile the picking was good and 38,870 acres practically h a lf o f them , a re fit fo r agricultural purposes a fte r th ey h »ve been logged o ff. A la rg e r proportion o f these agricu ltu ral lands h ave been partially cleared than o f the O. 4 C. lands, but w h at percen tage w e have no means at know ing. Som e o f these Wagon Road lands lie o s th e h ills which touch our c ity on th e east and most at the pipe lin e from Kink creek b rin gin g w ater to our c ity res ervoir winds through lands a t tid e grant which now bear no tim ber.
