Crescent City, Feb. 28.— The big
steel steamship Oregon, running be
tween Portland and Sau Francisco,
put iu at Crescent City early this
morning with her cargo badly dam
aged by tiro and still burning, and
her passenger list of 57 and crew all
safe, they having been transferred
to the steamer Del Norte and landed.
The vessel will probably not be de
stroyed, the danger point being
passed this afternoon.
The fire is
under control.
The passenger are
coming to Portland overland.
The Oregon took fire at 1 o’clock
vesterday afternoon, 15 miles south
west of Crescent City, the blaze orig
inatiug among miscellaneous merch
andise. A ll hands were at once
ordered out to fight the fire, and
the 57 passengers were advised to
prepard for emergencies, but were
kept comparatively calm at the same
time by information that the vessel
would probably be able to make
Crescent City harbor safely.
Despite frantic efforts by the
crew, the flames advanced until the
Oregon showed a heavy list. In
this predicament she was seen by
the Del Norte, which had put out
from this point, and all the passen
gers were safely transferred to the
Del Norte nnd to a collier. The Del
Norte brought the entire number in
this morning, the Oregon following
under her own steam.
The Oregon is a staunch steamer
of 2335 tons freight capacity, built
in 1877 by J. Roach <fc Son, of
Chester, Pa.
She is owned by the
White Star Steamship Company, of
Seattle, but is under charter to the
Portland A San Francis Stoamship
Coinpanj.
She left San Francisco
last Sunday.
It is plaiu that the creamery busi

new era. Never in the history of
the industry has there been such ac
tivity nnd a general waking up and
a battle of brains is on, as n result
of the determination on the part of
a few croamerymeu, backed by pro
gressive dealers, that they will have
the best that can bo turned out in
the way of butter.
To this end a number of cream
eries aro being reconstructed on
sanitary lines nnd no expense is be
ing spared to equip them with any
thing capable of bringing about the
one object quality. In the shuttle

abandoned and their milk supply
sent to properly equipped plants.
