To Oregon’s Educators: The Educational Department of the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition has adopted the follow ing plan of exhibit, viz: To make a carefully and thoroughly graded ex hibit from the kindergarten to the university. So far as practicable the exhibit will be arranged by counties. For purposes of organi zation the county will be the unit. The Educational Department recom- monds, however, a collective presen tation of the work from different counties, except in cities having special supervision. The collective exhibit plan will require that ma terial furnished by the different schools be assembled at some coun ty center, arranged, labeled, and shipped by county organizations. Papers that best illustrate county plan of exhibit will be placed in ex bibit cabinets, others will be bound at the expense of the State Commis sion. The arrangement will be by sub jects and grades, beginning with the lowest grade. A typewritten statement or outline of the work to bo exhibited in cubinets is essential to a correct understanding and pre sentation o f the exhibit. Exhibit cabinets are to be pur chased by exhibitors. This Depart ment recommends that these cab inet be kept at some convenient county location after the Exposition closes and become the center for the reception of meritorious work which may be supplied from tune to time to the end that the ex hibit idea may be made a useful adjunct for encouraging excellence of pupils’ work. It is the desire of the Department that the Oregon oducational exhibit shall honestly represent the real work of the schools in the best way possible. Local industries should form the foundation for a large share of language and geography work. Grain farming, stock rais ing, fruit and vegetable culture, be come at once the choicest of topics for written work. Visiting observ ers are always pleased and beue- fitted by the stories children write of their own environment. Our educational exhibit will come directly into comparison with that from such states as Massachusetts, New York, Missuri, Wisconsin and California, as well as our North western states. We want the com parison to be such as will fully ex press the good work being done all through the state. Each school dis trict in the state is cordially invited to send something for the exhibit. Local interest and local pride will certainly stimulate each to do its best. * R. F . R o b i n s o n , Sup’t. Educational Exhibit. Port Townsend, Wash., Jan. 31— The tug Holvoko arrived at Port Angeles this morning at 1:30 with S. S. Soyder, chief engineer, of Olympia, badly scalded on the body and legs, and tbe third assistant scalded on the face and arms. Sny der’s condition is quite serious, but the doctors say both have a good chance for recovery. The Olympia, which reached Port Angeles later in the morning, reported that her boiler-head blew out Friday eve ning while off Race Rocks. She will pro’jably return to Seattle for repairs. SDyder has a brother who is en gineer on the Sound tug Boyden. Captain H. B. Weaver, of the Clymp- ia, was formerly master of the Ro- anoak. Thu Olympia had left C o max, where she took fuel coai, and was on her way to Moji for orders. * P e u Y e a r NOTE AND CO M M ENT “ I do not think our banks are safe,” says Col. Bryan addressing tha Missouri legislature. We are feeling more optimistic about 'it since the incarceration of Mrs.[Chad wick. nowlton’s Drug Store - Besides a complete stock ol Drugs and Druggist’s Sun dries carries Kodaks and Sup plies, Phyrography outfits and Supplies. Someone somewhero is getting agitated about the “ Indian drink problem.” On the theory that a "drunken Indian is the most irre sponsible human being alive” it is urged to corral him as soon as he develops the habit and keep him a government prisoner. The sugges tion is a good one, but why expend our energy on the red man wben so many of our own race need corral- ing? Captain Algernon Sartoris, grand son of President Grant, has given a much-read magazine bis pessimistic impressions of Washington society. He finds tbe men boorish and not fit to leave with a woman alone, the women are either dull, ignorant provincial, or morally lax. Army officers’ wives are simple, quiet, re spectable persons which seem to be the climax of Capt. Sartoris’ epithet. Evidently this young army officer, appointed and tolerated because of his grandfather, has not been cordi ally received in Washington. John Burns, the Irish agitator, says that Chicago ia the pocket edition of hell. St. Louis believes it is an encyclopedia of that place. A Leavenworth, Kansas judge has issued 8,300 marriage? licences, mar ried 3,1000 couples and made out of the matrimonial business $28,000. I f he bad added a diyorce business on the side he might have retired by this time. N ig h t call b y pressing the b u tton at the right o l th e d oo r.
