There will doubtless be pictur
esque features in the streot parnde.
A squadron of Rough Riders splen
didly mounted will surround the
President’s carriage. Gov. Douglas
of Massachusetts will grace the pro
cession, as will his chief-of-staff
General Miles, and this, it is ex
pected, will be the center of long
swords nnd gold lace, surpassing
Solomon in his glory.
As a foil to
Gov. Douglas, Gov. Charles Deneen
will appear without a staff. He says
he wants no sunburst colonels
around him and that he cannot find
in the statutes any provision for
their appointment, nor would he
know what to do with them if he
had them.
The inquiry that has been con
ducted throughout the Summer and
Fall by the Bureau of Corporations
under the authority of Congress
concerning the doings of the Beef
Trust Is now complete nnd the re.
port of Commissioner Garfield is in
the hands of the President for trans
mission to Congress. It will be re
membered that the cause of this in
quiry ns stated was that since the
Summer of 100,‘t there line beeu too
wide a margin between the prico of
livo cuttle and the price of dressed
beef, the cattle selling so low that
many cattle owners had been made
bankrupt; and the inquiry is di
rected to find out whether the in
consistency between the low price
of live cnttle nnd the exhorhitaut
price of beef may not be caused by
an unlawful combination in restraint
o f trade.
It is said that the oom-
plniuts made in the resolution of
Congress have been verified, but
doubt is expressed whether the evi
dence of unlawful combination in
restiaiut of trade will stand the test
o f judicial investigation.
It must
be noted that the action now pend
ing in the United States Supreme
Court i" distinct from the inquiry
conducted hy Commissioner Gar
field of the Bureau of Corporations.

The Cosmopolitan Magazine occupies a po.si-
sion distinctly its own. While giving great
attention to fiction and entertainment—fifty
short stories ami one or more complete novels
appear in its pages each year—it has a definite
plan beyond. It may be likened to a great
modern university, with a million and a half
student.-readers. A year’s course embraces
what is most important in the Scientific field,
what is most interesting in Invention and Dis
covery, what is most entertaining in Travel
and adventure, what is most valuable in the
World of Business. A portion of each num
ber is edited with reference to the Woman of
the World, another to the Woman of the
Home, and another to interest Youth, and
still another for the Man of Affairs, covering
equally the clerk just starting in lite ami the
captain ot industry.
