NOTE AN D CO M M EN T
Tbe tariff skirmish lines are in
touch in Congress and a general en
gagement is imminent. The i ’resi
dent wants the Republicans in Con
gress to keep their pledge for tariff
revision and tbe republicans In Con
gress say they will keep their
pledges by and by or tomorrow or
at some future time. Speaker Can
non appears to be the center of op
position to revision. There is much
good humored sparring and chnffing
within republican rankR between
the two factions. The revolutionists
talk of “spiking the cannon,” or of
“ ramming tariff reform down the.
Cannon’s mouth.” The standpatters
say the President will not dnre to
call an extra session because it will
interfere with bis touring and bunt
ing trips during tbe Summer.

There was last week a conference
of a large number of republicans at
the Whitb House. They were in
vited by the President and be is
supposed to have said that be bad
invited them to learn what his own
views were and how he felt on the
subject of tariff revision. From all
that can be seen, tbe main result
was a general disagreement. In the
strong republican states, tho senti
ment against revision is almost uni
versal.
Informal polls of the var
ious delegations demonstrated that
only one of the twenty republican
members from New York is in favor
of revision.
In Pennsylvania the
republicans are unanimously against
revision. In Ohio and Illinois the
semtiment is in favor of leaving the
Dingley tariff bill untouched. If an
extra session is called it will prob
ably convene very soon aftor the
4th of March.
