    Semi-Weekly Herald
FRIDAY, JAN. 13, 1905.
Appropriation Aaked.
Delegation» representing Marsh,
field, North Bend, Myrtle Point and
Coquille waited upon the county
court Wednesday in behalf of an
appropriation by the county for a
Lewis and Clark exposition fund.
Since the state of Oregon has ap
propriated a half million of dollars
to this fair, it is now up to each
county to bustle up a good exhibit
so as to reap the proper benefits of
the money expended.
However,
money is not all that will be re
quired. A certain amount of indi
vidual effort will be required to
make the showing that must be
made in this instance. This is an
opportunity of a lifetime, and all
possible should be made of it. The
bay side was represented by E. L.
C. Farrin, H. Sengstaoken, I. S.
Kaufman, J. R. Blake, Thos. Vigars,
J. J. Burns, E. M. Rummell, L
J. Simpson and Chas. M. Sain;
Myrtle Point by J. C. Roberts, W.
E. Pike and 8 . D. Pulford; Coquille
by J. J. Stanley, W. C. Chase and
W . T. Kerr.
The amount asked was but $3000,
which is supposed to be only a
starter, there being much more
promised by individual contribu
tions. It is a good move and should
be followed up as closely as pos
sible. There is no good reason why
Coos should not loom up with an
exhibit that would do credit to aDy
county in the state.
Tbe “Coos Bay Harbor."
The above caption is the title of
the new paper which has been
started at North Bend to fill the
vacancy made by the suspension of
the Evening Post of that place.
Tbe first issue has reached our desk
and is what we pronounce as a very
presentable sheet and reflects great
credit upon its editor, Mr. Sain.
It is a six-column quarto, well filled
with spicy local and interesting
write-ups of various objects of im
portance on the bay, as well as the
full contents of a circular Boon to be
issued concerning North Bend, giv
ing a short history of tbe town as
well as n description of the numer
ous enterprises and industries.
He was Entitled to Vote.
Here is a question addressed to
the Portland Oregonian by a yoter
of Riverton precinct and the answer
received:
The Oregonian,
Portland, Oregon:
Was a voter who swore his vote
in at the June election entitled to
vote at the November election, there
being no blanks at hand to swear
him again.
As answered:
“ He was entitled to vote. If the
election officials had no blanks they
should have sworn the elector with
out a blank according to law.

Salem, Or., Jan. 10.—Three bills
that bid fair to set the fire of dis
cussion blaring were introduced in
the House this forenoon, out of a
total of 34. Prime among them is
a flat-salary bill by Kay of Marion,
in which the stipend of the Gov
ernor is fixed at $5000 a year, tbe
Secretary of State at $4500, the
State Treasurer the same, and the
Attorney-General at $3000.
The
bill provides that if any of these
officers fail to turn over any of the
fees collected by virtue of their
offices they shall be guilty of em
bezzlement and punished accord
ingly.

K u y k e n d a ll W in s P residen cy.
Salem, Or , Jan. 11.—Senator
Kuykendall, of Lane county, won
out in the contest for the presidency
o f the Senate, being elected Tues
day afternoon, with the support of
every Republican senator.
The Carter forces surrendered
upon receiving promises of liberal
treatment from the vutors, and to
night all is harmony and good will,
where last night all was discord and
bitterness.
In the final ballot, Carter voted
for Kuykendall and Kuykondall
voted for Carter. Democratic Sen
ator Smith offered a motion by
which the election of Kuykendall
was made unanimous. Both houses
are now organized and ready for
business.
The first order of business was
the election of permanent officers,
which resulted as follows: Chief
Clerk, 8 - L. Moorhead, of Lane;
Assistant, E. L. C. Farrin, of Coos;
Calendar Clerk, F. A. Turner, of
Marion; Reading Clerk, Frank
Motter, of Multnomah; Sergeant-
at-Arms, G P Terrell, of Marion;
Doorkeeper, ffm . Smith, of Clack
amas; Mailing Clerk, J. E. Barnett,
of Wasco.
Frank Middleton was
chosed to act as assistant Chief
Clerk until the arrival of the band-
some, talented and popular young
Marshfield attorney, who is now en-
route here from Marshfield os fast
as he can come.
Tbe Governor's message will be
read Thursday in joint convention
at 11 a. ra., according to a resolu
tion introduced by Linthicum, of
Multnomah.
