Portland, Dec. 22.— Western states will show Eastern visitors to the Lewis and Clark Centennial that the Oregon country and California can produce apples equal to auy grown elsewhere. The people of Michigan and New York, who come to the Western W orld’s Fair, are likely to be especially surprised when they sec the wonderrul dis play of apples on exhibition. The Oregon State Commission has for some months been prepar ing an apple display, and a large assortment of tho fruit has already been gathered and placed in cold storage, where it will be kept until the Exposition opens June 1, next. More recently, California has seen the advantage of advertising the state at tho Fair by an apple dis play, and tho State Board of Trade has sent communications to every largo apple-growing county in the state, addressing growers and local organizations that are in a position to help to exploit the resources of California in this way. While the season has been bad lor apples in some sections, the general outlook is good for a splendid shewing at Portland in 1905. Washington apple growers are likewise taking a keen interest in the Fair, and Governor McBride has been approached with a propo sition to have the state pay for the collection and storage of an apple exhibit. If tho state funds should not provide for meeting this expense there is no question that individual growers and local organiz.ations will take up the task. In Idaho, also, apple growers, in cited by reports of activity in other states, have begun to agitate the subject of a state display of this fruit, and prospects are bright for an exhibit that will rival those of the states better known for their re sources along this line. Special inducements will be made by J. D. Myres of Matt Rink creek, to anyone wishing a site for a port able sawmill. Everything neces sary right at hand for a business of this kind. * «•» -------------- Hicks' 1905 Almanac The Rev. Irl R. Hicks Almanac for 1905 is now ready, being the finest edition ever issued. Mysterious Strangers in Town. Many industrious gentlemen are in town from all parts of the state who appear to be extremely inter ested in the doings of the grand jury. They come, it is said, chiefly from those parts of the state from which members of the graod jury are drawn. Many of them are mod est and retiring in their manners and are not inclined to attract pub lic attention to themselves. Precisely what brings them hero at this holi day season when men usually like to -e at home can only be suspected. The suspicion is that they are ex tremely solicitous about what the grand jury may do. If left to them they would doubtless prefer that it did nothing. In devious ways much activity is being shown. It is now felt that the crucial mo ment is at hand when the govern ment's determination to follow the land fraud lead no matter where it goes irrevocable. T ie trail ia get ting so hot and it is being followed with Rucli persistency that startling results seem inevitable. The grand jury is therefore a storm center of E. M.
