FRIDAY, DEC. 16, 1904.
A t out the Fair.
Arago, Oregon, Dec. 8, 1904.
In your issue
of the 6th, inst., I notice the follow
ing:
“ As a matter of course the time
in which the Push Club had to
work was so short that they gave
up the St. Louis fair and saved their
money to put in on the Lewis and
Clark Exposition.’’
The old saying that a poor ex
cuse is better than none applies to
this.
The fact of the matter is the
Coos County Push Club was or
ganized in time and was making
every effort to have Coos county
represented at the St. Louis Expo
sition. The reason it failed was on
account of the indifference and
lethargy of the people of Coos
county generally. There was little
or no encouargement.
The county papers generally gave
valuable assistance They kept the
public informed, but withal it cre
ated no enthusiasm. The club sent
for 2500 buttons to raise a fund to
partly defray the expenses of an
exhibit The price of a button was
50 centB and entitled a purchaser to
membership in the club.
When
the buttons were put on the market
one of the leading papers published
at Marshfield ridiculed them. This
is mentioned simply to show what
the club had to contend with. There
were only about three hundred of
the buttons sold.
The sawmills of the county de
serve favorable mention. They vol
unteered to furnish the lumber for
a Coos county pavillion. The Lew
is and Clark commission promised
to forward the same to St. Louis
and erect it without expense to the
county. The pavillion without an
exhibit was of little use.
The ex
hibit failed to materialize.
The proceeds from the buttons
sold was used to pay for them and
the purchase of a number of glass
exhibit jars in which the club has
some choice apples preserved.
E d it o r H e r a l d :
The county court appropriated
$1,000 (by virtue of a law for the
purpose) to advertise the resources
of Coos county at the St. Louis and
Louis and Clark Exposition. OwiDg
to the St. Louis failure, none of
the appropriation has been used.
The Coos County Push Club was
organized to secure an exhibit for
and advertise the resources of the
county at both the St. Louis and
Lewis and Clark Expositions.
Its
active members (about eight all
told) devoted their time and paid
their own expenses in attending
meetings at Mnrshfiold and Coquille
to work the matter up. The writer
is confident that they will willingly
unite and give ethers an opportun
ity to gain n little experience in
such matters. Coos county’s por
tion of the $500,000 appropriated
by the legislature for the Lewis and
Clark Exposition is about $12,000,
The justice, pro or con, of this tax
cannot now be considered.
The
question now to consider is: “ How
can Coos county receive a benefit
from said lax?”
The only sensible solution to that
question in the opinion of the writer
is to voluntarily tax ourselves to
raise u fund sufficient to make a
creditable exhibit.
It will take money and push to do
it. If the people of Coos county
desire to be classed as a progressive
community it behooves them to get
into the push without delay. Shall
we do it?
