In order to increase the appropria tion for Columbia river work and improvements on other rivers in Oregon, Bingor Hermann, Repre sentative from Oregon, is now hur rying to Washington, D. C „ to ap pear before the river and harbor committee of the House of Repre sentatives. Unless Oregon shall be fully rep resented before the committee, ap propriations for rivers and harbors in this state may be pruned even lower than the Chief of Engineers has cut down the estimates of Major Langfitt. Though the Columbia river does not touch his district, Mr. Hermann recognizes its needs as the most important that the Ore gon members of Congress will have to urge at the National capital. Luckily Congress is disposed to be generous with the Columbia, no doubt because the river is one of tho largest in the United States. While Mr. Hermann would not commit himself, he spoke very favor ably of the hopes of the Oregon delegation toward securing a suf ficient sum for the work next year, —Telegram. Sisters Battle W ith a Burglar Fort Goes Skyward For an hour Miss Mattie Hall and her younger sister, Erma, daugh ters of Mrs. J. W. Hall, of Whittier, fought derperately with a burglar they found in their room at 241 South Greenleaf avenue upon awak . eniDg late Saturd*y n'6ht- In the struggle, in which their assailant endeavored to strangle Miss Mattie Hall, 9-year old Erma was severely bruised about the head. The two brave girls finally got the better of the intruder, who, be coming frightened by their screams for help, ran from the house and disappeared in the darkness. Rome, Nov, 26.— A dispatch to Italia Militarc from Tokio says the whole north side of Fort Ebrlung was blown up by the Japanese. Several hundred Russians were killed and twenty guns renderod useless. A concentrated bombard ment of Fort Erhlung by 300 Jap anese guns began this morning. Officers were notified and blood hounds were started on the trail, with the hope that the burglar might be caught before having an opportunity o f leaving the city. After a fruitless search, lasting sev eral hours, all trace o f the trail, heading from the valley in tho rear of tho Hall house, was lost.
