Husband who Beats W ile.
"The whipping-post should be
established to provide a punishment
for wifebeaters,” said Sig Michel
this morning.
Mr. Siehel is a
member of
the Police Board
and also a State Senator. He way
introduce such a bill at the next
session of the Legislature.
"That is the only way to punish
sufficieutly and effectually such
brutal men,” continued the law
maker, discussing the recent cases
of wifebeating which the police
have had to handle. ‘‘To imprison
a man who has abused his wife only
takes the support from the family.
If a man is fined heavily, that also
works a great hardship on the fam
ily, as it deprives them from the
money which would be used to pur
chase food and to provide protec
tion.
"If a man fouud guilty of such a
charge were severely whipped he
could be released immediately, and
the protection of the family would
continue. If this punishment were
meted out there would bo less cruel-
ty toward woman.” —Telegram.

of il is COVf-le<1 with sparse timber,
but a great portion of it has a'dense
growth of fir and pine, with con
siderable sugar pine, which tanks
close to the famous redwood in
point of general value.
There is no question but that the
throwing open of these lands will
be of great benefit to this section
of the state, as the reserves sur
rounds Josephine conunty on three
sides, practically "bottling” it up.
It likewise wag detrimental to min
ing progress, as prospectors are
slow in prospecting lands that are
held in close title by the govern
ment. A good many squatters have
already been placed on locations,
and others will be taken up rapidly,
as the number of sawmills and the
great demand for lumber make tim
ber lands, even in the more remote
purts, of exceptional value. 8omc
of the land is yet unsurveyed.

The lands hero are not the reg
