Cooe County Mines.
The mining industry in the vi
cinity o f Salmon Mountain and on
South Sixes river, just across the
line into Curry county, has more
than trebled during the last year,
and it must be admitted that the
hunt for, and the extracting of the
precious metals ftom that mining
belt has assumed an importance
second to none in this section.
It
has been known for years that Sal
mon Mountain was a rich propo
sition.
This has been exemplified
when from four to twenty-eight
hundred were cleaned up from the
sluice boxes after a ten-days’ run
at various times.
That property
has been bonded and movements
are in progress to put water upon
the mine for placer mining and to
plant proper machinery thereon to
extract gold from the many strata
of quartz that have been uncovered,
some of which have assayed up
into the hundreds ol dollars to the
ton. The mines on the beach was
the first incentive to settlers along
this coast a half century ago and
since then slow but sure develop
ments have taken place, and now
eastern capital is coming to the front
and large and expensive develop
ments may be looked for in the near
future, in fact, a Philadelphia com
pany have already commenced on a
large scale to extract pay from the
Divilbiss group including the prop
erty known as the Big Joe and Little
Mery and other claims formerly
worked by the Myrtle Point Min
ing Co. A tramway for a car is
being built along the group, thus
enabling the eompany to select ore
from the best claims.
They have
a five-stamp mill in fine running
order and good results may soon be
looked for. Mr. W hitney, o f South
Sixes, has a large crew at work on
“ a sure prospect” for the Phila
delphia company.
The Salmon
Mountain Coarse Gold Mining
company have had men at work
this summer preparing for extensive
improvements.
They, too, have
been aided by eastern capital, so
the people of Coos and our sister
county may well be congratulated
for having such bright prospects
before them.
Woodruff, Woodford and Ormsby
have lately sunk a shaft on the old
Bray claim east ot Salmon Moun
tain aDd found rich decomposed
quartz that yield as high as one
dollar to the pan when pulverized.
This vein is widening out as they
go down, and they have oniy gone
down 14 feet. Mr. Ormsby is an
assayet by profession, and has quite
an elaborate laboratory at his camp,
and he estimates that it will yield
about $100 to the ton.
Joe Kennedy has also made an
excellent find while extending a
tunnel in an old abandoned claim
on the north bank o f Johnson creek.
Ira Buzan has a promising quartz
claim that shows good ore all along
on both sides of a long tunnel he has
run on the divide between Sucket
creek and Poverty gulch, beside he
has an interest in the Nugget
Patch, claims that have turned out
a large amount or nuggets and
amalgam, and a very promising
placer claim near the Flanagan Bar.
Salmon Mountain is yielding rich
ore at the west end and the secre
tary o f the Coarse Gold Mining Co.
has uncovered at the upper end of
the cut in that famous mine a
quartz vein that is believed to be
the feeder to the placer mine and it ts
hoped that it is the same ledge that
the Dunbar boulder o f $2700 came
from, so we see that there is
much more activity in mining and
with better results than have been
attained for manv years, and we
believe there is more interest and
stronger hopes fot success than have
been since the famous discovery by
Mr. Dunbar.
