insisted that it should remain 18}
cents. Last Friday the union was
notified that the paokers had no
concession to make and tbe strike
was at once declared..
St. Joseph, Mo., July 12-— More
than 5000 employes of Swift & Co.,
Nelson, M orris A Co. and the Ham­
mond Packing Company in South
Joeeph went oat on a strike at noon
today and the plants have closed
down. The strikers are orderly
and there has been no attempt at
demonstration o f aDy kind.
About 700 men employed in the
yards o f the packing houses and
many yards o f tbe packing house
and many employed by tbe Stock
Tarda Company are thrown oat by
tbe strike-
East St. Lonis, III., July 12.—At
noon today more tban5000 butchers
and cutters employed by the pack­
ing houses here stopped work.
The men quit work very quietly
and there was no disturbance when
they left the stock yards.
