K lam ath Falls, Ore. — A ttem pts to
s ta rt fires in K lam ath Falls and on a
stock ranch in the vicinity as well as
the poisoning of large num bers of live
stock led to more active steps Tuesday
to round up the I. W. W. elem ent in
this county. Some of those arrested
Monday were released upon exam ina
tion, while several new a rrests were
made.
The number of armed deputies is
being increased by Sheriff Humphrey
and guards a t all m anufacturing plants
are being strengthened.
The local fire departm ent answered
an alarm Monday night a t 11 o ’clock
a t the home of C. A. Bunting, for
merly president of the K lam ath Falls
W ater U sers’ association here, where
a fire was set w ith kindlings under the
north side of the barn near the house.
A north wind was blowing, and if the
fire had not been discovered before it
had gained headway the barn and resi
dence undoubtedly would have been
destroyed. Mr. Bunting lives in one
of the m ost exclusive residence dis
tric ts about a mile from th e center of
the city, and it is thought th a t the ob
je ct was to g e t the departm ent far
away so th a t fires could be se t else
where and be destructive.
G reat numbers of livestock have
been poisoned in the lava bed country
on the Oregon-Califom ia line south of
here.
J . Frank Adams, one of the most
prom inent and extensive ranchers in
K lam ath county, last Saturday discov

the “ P ” and “ P itch fo rk ” ranches, and
belonging to various farm ers in South
ern K lam ath county, w ere also found
dead, besides about 40 sheep belonging
to Cox Bros., of th is county.
No clew has been obtained as to how
the poison came to be placed.
Mr. Adams also reports th a t about
11 o’clock Monday m orning he discov
ered an attem p t to brun his big barns
and other outbuildings on his home
ranch near M errill, south of here.
Two small sticks had been set a t the
south side of the barn, and to them
was attached a powerful m agnifying
glass so placed as to have produced fire
and a blaze when the sun arrived a t a
certain position in the sky. The glass
later was proved to have been of suffi
cient stren g th alone for the purpose.
Mr. Adams says he has no reason to
suspect any of the many laborers he
employs for these actions.
Mr. Adams has furnished great
numbers of horses for the aliles since
th e w ar began, and raises g rea t herds
of beef cattle every year.
