Base Ball
The general public has grown to
appreciate the need of athletic* in
the school. Educators of promi
nence are all agreed that a sound
body is essential to the develoiie-
rnent of a sound mind. Even the
rural schools are being supplied
with play sheds and equipment
necessary for the derelopement of
good health.
Occasionally we
find a man who tells us wit>h an
air of righteous indignation that
“ When I was a boy we did not
bother with such things.’’ We will
concede that be, possibly did not
need the physical training when
he was a youth, but a comparison
of the conditions under which he
received his education with those
of the modern la«*., is convincing
proof of the fallacy of his argu
ment. Contrast a three months
term of schr,ol with a nine iuoiitb
term; nine months of farm labor
with thre« months, often but two
months, vacation in a city, and
we hs.ve an emphatic refutation.
8ince Base Ball has become an
established sport and ioterscho-
lastic gamos are acknowledged to
be esceuti.il to school activities, to
place the good and bad features of
the “ national pastime” in the bal
ance and find what it really means
to the participant ¡and the entire
school is not out of place. In re
gard to tiio.se actively engaged in
the game, little need be said, for
all are aware of the splendid qual
ities developed in the player. The
chief criticism to athletics is that
only those practicing are benefited
aud this is partly true. It creates
a school spirit and stimulates the
younger hoys to imitate the older
pupils, which result« in good.
It is our opinion th a t interscho-
lastic contests are worthy as any
other activity, providing they are
kept on a strict amatuer basis.
