Questions the Patrlotlem of Those
Who Travel in Danger Zone.
Chicago, Aug. 23. —William J.
Bryan, former secretary o f state,
tonight gave out a signed state
ment here, in part as follows:
“ I have read the editorial opin
ions concerning the sinking o f the
Arabic, as those opinions were re
produced in the papers, but they
seem to me to avoid the most im
portant question. The real ques
tion is not whether American cit
izens have, under international
law, a right to travel through the
danger zone on the ships o f belli
gerent nations. That is admitted.
“ The question just now is
whether an American citizen
should put his convenience, or even
his rights, above his nation's wel
fare. I f American citizens refuse
to consider their own safety or the
safety o f the nation, then a sec
ond question arises, whether the
government should permit a few
persons to drag the country into
this unparalled war.”

Savannah, Ga.—Dr. Joseph Goldberg-
er. In charge o f pellagra research
work for the public health service, an
nounced that experiments conducted at
the Georgia and Mlsslsslpl state sanl-
larlums have confirmed the theory that
pellagra is caused by eating too much
starchy food.
According to Dr. Goldberger, experl-
menta have proved the theory conclu
sively. He added that It had been de-
termined that the disease was not con,
taglous.
"W h ile pellagra is more prevalent In
the south than in the north, there Is
just ns much a posstbiity o f the re-
verse." said Dr. Goldberger. "except
for the fact that northern people eat
more meat and other nonstarch foods
than do the people o f the south."
