Pumps Five Bullets Into Roy
Curtis, Then Dives Him
self Up to Sheriff,
Lakeview, O r., July 13.— J. B.
Auten, a retired h ard w are dealer
o f this place, shot and instantly
killed Roy Curtis and tonight sur
rendered to the authorities. Mrs.
Auten had left the house just a
short time previously and had
gone to the house of a neighbor
w here Mr. Curtis w a s staying.
Mr. Auten followed her into Cur
tis’ room w here he found her seat
ed on Curtis’ *ap, and fired at
Curtis five times with a 44-caliber
Colt’s revolver. A ft e r committing
the tragedy Auten gave himself
up to the sheriff and he is now in
the Lake county jail aw aitin g the
action o f the county officials.
Wants County to Pay
The county court has received,
through an attorney o f Chicago, a
demand for ten per cent royality
on all the re-inforced concrete
bridges in Polk county. The Chic
ago attorney claims that his client
is the inventor and patentee of the
process used in the construction
of these bridges. The largest
bridge o f this kind in the county
is the one at Independence, which
cost about $5,000, but there are
numerous small ones, which would
make the commissions, if allowed,
run into several thousand dollars.
The court has taken the claim
under advisem ent— Itemizer.
Serves Him Right
Judge H. H. Belt says they can
legislate him out o f holding court
in Tillamook county, but they can't
legislate him out o f coming over
to this county to recuperate and
enjoy his usual fishing outings. It
is. however, reported that the
ju dge w as legislated out of fishing
on one occasion, when the boys
were yanking out the speckled
beauties from the river and he
w a s about to do the same and he
found that he had left his license
in the pocket o f another coat.
The snap shot man don’t think
that even a judge would resist
that kind o f a temptation, for it
would only have been a technical
error had he yanked out some fine
fish, also.—Tillamook Headlight.
The ju dge should know better
than to own tw o coats.
