Washington, Aug. 6,— Mrs. Wood-
row Wilson, wife of the President of
the United States, died at the White
House at 5 o'clock this afternoon.
Death came after a brave struggle
for months against Bright's disease
with complications.

Some of the newspapers that
are opposing Dr. Whithycombe in
his candidacy for governor appear
to be much worried over the bad
breaks they claim the doctor is
making on the stump. They aver
that his chances would be much
greater should he hie himself to
some sequestered nook and con
ceal himself until after the elec
tion. However, this may be, we
are not in position to gainsay, but
were we opposing the doctor as
strenuously as are some of the
newspaper brethren, and the said
doctor was making himself so rid
iculous politically, we should say,
go to it doctor, rather than at
tempt to manage his campaign
and point out the pitfalls—and
really, we believe that the news
papers that are so violently oppos
ing him would too.
Lost Opportunities
Only about 27 per cent of the
tillable land in the United States
is under cultivation, and that
which is cultivated produces no
more than a fraction of what it
might. Our methods of growing
crops are primitive in the extreme.
They waste work and exhaust the
soil. When a man raises from ten
acres no more than five would
grow under proper tillage he
throws away more than half his
time, labor and invested capital.
If half the hills in a cornfield are
vacant something is wrong with
the man who owns it. He has
not learned the elements of good
management.
There is vacant land enough in
side the limits of Portland to feed
the city if it were tilled scientific
ally. The ordinary back yard will
grow food for a family with some
to sell under skillful hands. The
sewage of Portland would double
the crops of the vicinity if it were
saved and utilized. We have
hardly begun as yet to tap the re
sources of the earth.—Oregonion.
