J. A. Vanzandt, general m ana
ger and sales agent of the Falls
City Orchard Company, wan in
Corvallis recently in conference
with members of the 0 . A. C.
faculty in regard to the analysis
of soils to be found on their prop
erty. The company, of which W.
Yates and Mr. Vanzandt are
heavy stockholders, owns 500
acres about two miles from Falls
City and it is the intention to set
this to such fuit as analysis will
show it to be adapted for. This
ground is the H. H. G rant farm,
owned by him since 1848, and
having passed from his owner
ship only very recently. The
farm is widely known for its
richness of soil, and Mr. Van
zandt has confidence th a t it is
ideal orchard land. While here
he hopes to make arrangem ents
for a graduate in horticulture to
oversee the work to be done in
the near future. The intention
of the company is to produce a
great orchard along lines calcu
lated to obtain the best results,
regardless of cost.

Nothing is so successful as co

and boost and we all will benefit
therefrom.
I expect to settle affairs so as
to be able to locate in your city
within four or five months, and
you may rely on me to do my share
in helping to boost for Falls City.
In the meantime, please inform
me on what conditions one can
join your commercial club.
I am an Eastern man, and have
been in Portland or.ly about a
year, but I am the “ advance;
guard’' for quite a number of
other Eastern people who also
will locate in Falls City.
Congratulations on your recent
election to the presidency of the
commercial club.
Respectfully,
A r c h ib a ld J. L y on .
[Mr. Lyon and all his friends

See our store windows for bills
posed by some persons to be an ade-
quate meal for a man of today.
As against this it is interesting to
set down what Gervais Markham in
1675 sets forth as “a human may
keep in his family for the entertain
ment of his true and worthy
friends.” First warning the mas
ter of the feast that he must con
sult the season of the year, since
summer affords what winter wants,
and vice versa, he goes on to say:
“It is good for him who intends
to feast to set down the number of
his full dishes—that is, dishes of
meat that are of substance and not
empty or for show—and of these
sixteen is a good proportion for one
course unto one mess (meal), as
thus for example: First, a shield of
brawn with mustard; secondly, a
boyled capon; thirdly, a boylcd
piece of beef; fourthly, a chine of
beef roasted; fifthly, a neat’s tongue
roasted; sixthly, a pigge roasted;
seventhly, chewets bak’d; eighthly,
a goose roasted; ninthly, a swan
roasted; tenthly, a turkey roasted;
eleventh, a haunch of venison roast
ed; twelfth, a pasty of venison;
thirteenth, a pigge with a pudding
in the belly; fourteenth, an olive
pie; the fifteenth, a couple of ca
pons; the sixteenth, a custard of
dousets. Now to these full dishes
may be added sallets, fricassees,
quelque choses and devised paste, as
many dishes more, which make the
full service no less than two and
thirty dishes, which is as much a*
can conveniently stand on one table
and at one meas. And after thia
manner you may proportion your
aecond and third meaa, holding ful-
neas in one half the dishea and
show in the other, which will be
both frugal in the spender, content
ment to the guests and much pleas
ure and delight to the beholders.”

Is it not passingly singular at
least that the name of God should
be spelled with four letters in al
most every known language? In
Latin it is Deus; Greek, Zeus; He
