marred by an assault upon Premier
Briand who, while walking with Pres
ident Fallieres, was struck twice in

set upon the Premier's assailant, but
determined Intervention by the guards
saved him from being beaten to death.

such as tho first telephone, first sew
ing machine and first phonograph.

brought an improved condition of gov
ernment finances, showing a surplus
of more than $760,000 as against a de
ficit of $2,500,000 a year ago. - ..
The total net revenue of the steam
railroads In the United States last
July was $73,477,590, or $308.51 per
mile of line, against $78,139,043, or
$335.16 per mile of line, in July of
last year, according to the revenue
and expense report issued by the in
terstate commerce commission. : .
Attorney General Wlckersham, by di

an inquiry to determine whether 8,000
acres of valuable oil lands in Cali
fornia were known to contain oil when

state railroad commission by the Pull
man Car Company, gross earnings for
purely local business of the company

Encouraged by the results attained
by a dredge of small capacity after
two years' operation In the Rogue
river, in Oregon, the Scandinavian
American Dredging Compny, which
Is composed of a number of promi
nent Seattle capitalists and profes
sional men, has decided to push the
work of extracting gold from the
sands of the river by Installing a
mammoth new dredge, which has al
ready been constructed and is bow
ready to be put to work.
The fact that Coos county baa been
voted dry wilt bring about much liti
gation. The liquor Interests have
planned to start an Injunction suit
against the county court to restrain
the court from declaring this county
dry. The grounds for the injunction
are that the petition was technically
wrong. County Judre Hall aet No

the result of the election and at this
time the legal action will probably
begin.
