Dan Morgan' Smith spoke in 'the
opera house, Thursday night, on
Prohibition- ia Wrong, Morally," to
an audience of . perhaps 250 people, .
including many who differ from the
speaker on that Issue but, who gave
him a respectful hearing. The
speaker was Introduced by A. C. Mil
ter, manager of the opera house.
Captain Smith la a Georgian by
birth but la now a resident of Chi-,
cago where he Is a prominent law
yer. He Is employed by the Great
er Oregon Home Rule association'
of Portland. He saya he never drank
liquor, but occasionally takes a
glass of beer. He U certainly a
forceful, eloquent and effective orator
His main argument was that pro-'
hiblitlon Is a failure in correcting
or lessening the evils of the abuae
of intoxicants. The dive flourishes
more under prohibition than under
regulation. He favors drastic regu-,
lation, making it obligatory on offl
cers.under penalty of Impeachment,
to forfeit the licenaea of second of
friends. " '

8TRANGER DIES AT JOSEPH.
H. Cleaveland, representative of
a Portland nursery, died suddenly
Thursday night, at the Mitchell hotel,
Joseph, of heart trouble. He was
about 45 years of ego and leaves, a
family 1m Portland, to which place
the body waa shipped. The deceased
.was at the Hotel Enterprise about
a week ago. '
