sea park. Loudon. Mrs. Jane Roberts,
widow of Joseph J. Roberts, who was
elected the first president of Liberia In
1847. .
Mrs. Roberts was born In America
In ISIS, the daughter of a Buptist min
ister named Waring, and went to Li
beria with ber parents, both octoroons.
In 1824. She married Roberts In 1830
and visited with him most of the Eu
ropean courts In the fifties. She lived
for over seventy years of her life in
Liberia before going to London.
PRINCE A POOR LAWYER.
Fails to Clear German Burglar In
First Case.
A laborer who appeared In the pris
oners! dock In a Berlin police court on
a charge of burglary had something of
a shock when be heard the announce
ment that his defense would be con
ducted by his serene highuess the
Prince of Rntibor.
The accused having no counsel, the
Court bad appointed the young prince,
who Is a member of the ancient house
(if Ilobenlolie, to defend him. It was
the prince's first case. The royal law
yer put up a spirited defense, but the
evidence was too strong, and his Brut
client was sentenced to four years
penal servitude.

planted in the lakes of Klamath
County.
J. T. Harper of Tygh valley has
filed his declaration of Intention to be
a candidate for representative from
Hood River and Wasco Counties in
the democratic primaries.
To date, six postmasters In Oregon
have asked that postal savings banks
be established In their towns, and
nine banks have applied to be made
depositories of postal funds.
The water and light plant of Hllls
boro was attached by the sheriff, at
the Instance of J. W. Shute,, a local
banker and capitalist, for the sum of
$15,500 and Interest.
The Medford Commercial Club has
voted to raise $10,000 by subscription
to buy a building site for a $100,000
hospital to be conducted by the Sis
ters of Providence.
The opening of the forty-ninth Ore
gon state fair, on Monday, September
12, will usher In what promises to be
the greatest state fair Oregon has
ever held.
The little village of Harriman, 35
miles southeast of Burns,' was -swept
by a disastrous Are early ' Sunday
morning that destroyed the only. busi
ness block in the place, In which were
located the store, hotel and postofflce.
James W. Nathan, colored, was
killed by his wife In their home at
Portland during a scuffle over the pos
session of a revolver. Death was al
most instantaneous. The woman said
after her arrest that her husband had
threatened to shoot her. .
C. P. Strain, assessor of Umatilla
County, has filed his declaration of in
tention with the secretary of state at
Salem, to become a candidate for the
democratic nomination for railroad
commissioner. "J?
Oregon has at last a naval reserve
with Portland as the home of the first'
division. A second division may pos
sible be established at Astoria when
the organization gets on a good work
ing basis. A commission for the state
naval reserve has been granted.
Farmers In the moutaln country ad
jacent to Weston are preparing to
plant commercial orchards, and 30 or
more have contracted for trees. Visit
ing experts have pronounced the
mountain soil to be well adapted for
Winter apples and pears without Irri
gation, and each of the farmers inter
ested will plant from one to ten'acres
of these fruits this fall.
Eight hundred thousand dollars was
added to the total sum that will be ex
pended in railroad construction begun
In Oregon this year by the letting of
the contract for the building of the
"Coyote cut-off," on tne main line of
the Oregon Railroad & Navigation
Company.
The Great Northern Railway has
presented to the prize committee of
Lane County Fair Association two
beautiful silver cups and a large as
sortment of ribbons, to be distributed
among competitors at the coming fair
for various degrees of excellence of
grain, vegetables and fruit.
Construction is being pushed on the
Klamath Falls-Natron line, but no
construction is beinng done by the
Oregon Trunk In. Klamath County.
Surveyors are at work in the Wood
river valley and vicinity. No loca
tions for the line from the head of the
Upper Klamath lake to Klamath Falls
have been made. It Is believed that
the road will be built to that the vast
Umber holdings of the Weyerhaeuser
Company can be tapped.
Now that the forest fires In South
ern Oregon ara dying out, the extent
of damage is found to be far less than
the early estimates. On the contrary,
the Area have been a benefit, accord
ing to George F. King, owner ot ex
tensive timber areas in Jackson Coun
ty. Mr. King says the Ore in many
fnstancea have burned only the un
derbrush, which permits a growth of
grass and leaves the forests in less
danger of subsequent fires.
An average reduction of 16 per cent
on the rates of Wells, Fargo Co.
was decided on last evening after a
two-days' conference between the rail
road commission and officials of the
express company. While the short
hauls are not materially changed,
there are substantial reductions on
the long hauls. The new rate sheet
will be effective about October 1 or
ai soon aa the express company can
stake it revision.

The sands of the sea are singularly
Useful. They are of primary impor

of silica, the chief constituent of sand,
is negative.
Tbe singular drying effect which oc
curs when h stretch of wet mind is
pressed by tbe foot is due enUrely to
an alterutlou In tbe pillux of the sand
grains. Normally the grains are close
together, but abnormal piling Is
brought about by pressure of tbe foot,
the space between the edges of the
grains being enlarged and tbe water
drained away. If the pressure of tbe
foot is continued the sand becomes
wetter tbun ever, the partial vacuum
quickly bringing water from the sur
rounding sand.
Id quicksand, the moving character
Is thought to be due to tbe Imprisou
meut between the grains of gases from
