garden seat, proceeded to pick his

and expectant eye on the distant
house.
The. partners sat in moody silence
for some time until at length their
reveries were Interrupted by the ad
vent of Judge rioydell, Mr. Randall
and M. Veaudry. The Judge had but
returned from the steamboat lauding,
and as he approached the occupants
of the garden seat his expression was
of so serious a character that Bunee,
ever on the lookout for trouble, now
scented danger and, nudging bis com

wardly cool and entirely self possess

"Colonel Moreau. sir," began the

you that you hud no right to be here

As rieydell, preserving bis stern de

"Well, I reckon I'd have to say that

Pleydell began to laugh.
: "Well, sir, according to rumor, you

To hliu It was n huge Joke. - and be

with a smile. "I don't ..want-to miss
that." - ; '
I Ills composure somewhat, recovered;
but, still chuckling and occasionally go

the Judge proceeded to explain the

But It was apparent that Mr. Ran
