To the only girl. Adelc, had fallen
the brunt of suffering. The General,
a child of eight, was too young to fully
comprehend bis loss, while Tom, a
hot headed youth In his early twenties,
occupied all bis time with the planta
tion and devoted all spare moments to
nursing his hatred against Klrby's
memory. While glorying In the tat
ter's supposed death he deplored that
his band bad not effected It. Where
grief had paralyzed Adele It bad but
further aroused the boy'a mllltuut aud
aggressive nature, adding, moreover, a
veneer of youthful aud bitter cyulclsm.
He abhorred Klrby's memory with an
Intensity passing the hatred of man
. and, even bad he been a stranger to
the then prevailing and primitive no

gaged with bis chosen profession.
Young Itaudall returned borne, care
fully concealing from his sister all hint
of bis mission. The girl bad but lately
expressed a desire to visit tbelr uunt in
New Orleans, for the plantation waa
pregnant with memories and sorrows
that were fast growing unbearable.
Taking advantage of this opportune
desire and keeping his real purpose In
the background. Tom now suggested
that the house be temporarily closed
and the long contemplated visit paid.
Securing Adele's assent to this and
satisfied that Klrby was alive and that
Justic e had yet to be meted out. young
Randall, as wns the custom in such
matters, promptly set about Informing
Ms male relatives aud friends. Among
the latter was Judge rieydell. a neigh
bor, whose plantation adjoined on the
