' The games of laet Sunday played
in the Two-County league left Elgin
in first place, Enterprise In second.
La Grande in third and Joseph - in
fourth. The games both between La
Grande and Enterprise and between
Elgin and Joseph were good games.
But that played on the home grounds
here, resulting in a score of 1 to 0
in favor ofLa Grande and against En
terprise, was one of the best ball
games ever .witnessed In eastern Or
egon. Both teams got down to the
brass tacks of ball playing from the
. start. The weather condition was
against the excellent playing, but
the excellent playing kept right on.
A high wind arose and dropped pop
over squarely tnito fielders' mils,
but the boys kept, right on clout
ing the ball. A flurry of rain de
scended but the players on bothj
sides grimly stuck to the field,
"burnt'' the sphere here and there,
and held grimly to the business) of
playing ball. .
At the conclusion La Grande got
an even break in safe hits with En
terprise, four each. And the visi
tors pulled down and took back home
with them one score which spelled
victory.
While Ent rprlse Is not going to
be defeated, if she can help H, even
by a score of 1 to 0, still a game
played on the margin of 1 to 0 is
an honor to both sides.

The Wallowa county fair at Enter

autside , In other townships. .The
business men of this city have taken
the matter up, and have foregone
any Fourth of July celebration in
order to devote all the more . time
and money to the holding of ' the
county fair here. ' '
Material is Here.
The material for a successful coun
ty fair Is here. AH that Is needed
is to get representative agricultur

ed in the matter, along with the1 bus
iness men , of this and all other
iltK-s In the county, In order to
old a county fair that wlll.be a
credit to the whole of . Wallowa
co'inty.
Such a fair would be one of the
biggest advertising cards' that could
be presented to the prospective set
tlers of the future. It would be also
a source of inspiration , to every
Wallowa county farmer and stock
Joan. .
The material already here will
weigh up and score up and mark
up with that of any other county In
America. We' have mineral tni this
county that would make one of the
finest displays of gold, sliver, copper,
lime, and other rock, la the world.
A. mines and mining section in. the
fair could be established, to the ever
lasting good of every resident of
f.he county nd to the everlasting ad
vertisement or the county. .
We have corn altitudes and cli
mates In the : county where , good
;orn Is raised annually. We have
jxcel'.ent fruit altitudes i.ndi some of
.he finest stra.wberries, .apples and
peaches that were ever put oo exhi

rye, and all small grains also are
raised -here in abundance. Besides
ill this, we have some of the-f to
ast wool, finest sheep, finest .cattle,
hogs and horses raised, in the west
iny where.
Bring Them Together.
, The county fair In Enterprise will
bring all these products together on
3xhlbition. Fora visitor from ' the
2ast to "drop in" and view such an
)xhlbltion would be Tor him, in many
instances, to hurry back home, pack
ip, and hurry back to Wallowa coun
y to get in the swim where values
;row while he sleeps and opportuni
ties are picked up dally every time
ae turns around if he is wide awake
and Industrious. .:..
Such a fair can be ' made to pay
and clear expenses from the start.'
By getting representative fanners
'or directors, every to,wnshtp will
have an Interest In such a fair. Ev
ry township will be repr seated and
will take, pride In being represented
In such a fair. And everybody In
ihe county will vie with everybody
also in exhibiting the "' best" and
grabbing the blue ribbons, and in at
tending such a fair. Let the work

Quite a strategy was attempted,
however, in, the effort to get the

known to Sheriff Marvin a man ap

he held , an order from the county
prisoner, which order was signed
In the presence of the sheriff.
Agent Butner, however, refused to
permit the "doom'' to leave the sta

nothing about the consignment un
til so informed by Agent Butner,
and consequently the "booze" re

CONSIDER OPERA
MATTER BROUGHT UP BEFORE
THE ENTERPRISE COMMER
CIAL CLUB.
One of the matters considered by
the local Commercial club, at its
Last meeting, was that of taking up
the opera house problem In Enter
prise, with a view to making it pay
3xpenses- by 'furnishing the show
5ors with good' home talent and
sood outside entertainments. While
nothing definite has been- determln
ad upon thus far, the matter has cre
ated considerable patriotic discus
lion, and varying suggestions have
een made.
As a rule opera houses are ex
pensive things,' but they can, again
i a rule, be made to pay expenses
when everybody works to that
3nd. The suggestion that home tal
ent entertainments be given and
ihat' outside or professional enter-
alnmenls be given to addition, seems
'.o i solve the problem. Enterprise
ias the talent in both music . and
Iramatlc j&ases, and home entertain-
nents If rehearsed well and if made
move with the proper "go" and
spirit, are always attractive and well'
received everywhere. - The . home
ooard could put on operas, dramas,
jld-tlme minstrel shows, and these
with outside professional- entertain-
aienta could te made to keep the
jpera house running and at least
?ay the running expenses. '
What the commercial club will do,
r what it will not do, Is not known
it this time. It is safe to venture,
iiowever, that if the members see
"he club's way 'clear to take hold of
"-he opera house, and pay nothing
bove the expense of It, they will
orobably do so. ' - '
