In a recent speech on the assimila
tion of Immigrants Secretary JCagel ol
the department of commerce and labor
outlined a policy which looks to more
vigorous state action In this particular
field. Nearly all of the states are vital
ly interested lu this matter of placing
immigrants rijjht as soon as they land
States contiguous to the great ports ol
entry ure In a position to do good mis
sionary work for the nation at large
the while they look after thulr own
particulur interests.
. It is a4blg task for the federal gov
ernment to undertake to pluce satis
factorily the vast droves of men and
women who come here In uelp'ess lg
norance of conditions. To discriminate
would be Impossible, and the bent thai
could be done would amount to merelj
dumping train loads upon the nearest
vacant territory and letting them shift
for themselves. The states, however
would handle contingents of a few
hundred at most and can .safely at

A Church In Wales.
Wrexham purl.sh church is known as

teenth century and Is cathedral-like in
