The word "Vermont" on a can of
maple syrup has always raised that
brand about one hundred per cent in
the estimation of the buyer. A few
years ago, however, a method was dis
covered of imparting this same delic
ious flavor to preparations without the
use of real maple syrup. - This flavor
ing extract is called Mapleine.
If a dish of syrup made with maple
ine and the real Green Mountain kind
is placed before a Vermonter, he would
not be able to tell the difference be
tween the two. This is largely due to
the absolute purity of the ingred
ients and the great care used in the
manufacture.
Mapleine is purely vegetable - and
makes a syrup that is equal to any and
superior to most brands of maple syrup
that are placed on the market.
To make delicious flavorings for
cakes, ice cream and sauces, nothing is
required but a little granulated sugar
and water with a few drops of maple
ine dissolved therein. Housewives Bnd
it a great convenience in preparing
puddings out of leftovers.
A little booklet, with the title of
"Mapleine Dainties", is published by
the Crescent Manufacturing company,
who are the makers of Mapleine. The
booklet will be sent free to anyone who
asks for it Nearly every grocer car
ries Mapleine. Try some today and
you will say the same that thousands
of others have, that here is a flavor
with the real maple taste. This little
suggestion for a sauce for puddings :
Whites of two eggs, one and a half
cups of granulated sugar, one cup of
milk, one teaspoonful of mapleine.
Mapleine is to be used anywhere (hat
another flavoring could be used.

Paris, Jan. 29. After a slow but
steady rise of the flood waters all day,
the Fluvial department at midnight
could only issue a statement saying
mat it was possible the crest of the
flood would be reached tomorrow.
The water has beiran to fall in all of
the tributaries of the Seine above
Paris, but the passage through the
city is clogged by bridges and an im
mense accumulation of drift continued
tonight. Sailors, firemen and police
are hastily constructing temporary
walls by the light of campflres and
torches in an endeavor to keep out the
invading Hoods, while pickets patrol
those sections of the city that are
plunged in darkness.
The situation in the Place de 1 'Opera
tonight is serious. The entire terri
tory has been roped off as unsafe. It
is said also that the new Equitable
Life Assurance building is in danger
of collapse.
President Fallieres and Premier
Briand today drove in automobiles to
the flooded suburbs, where distress is
greatest, speaking words of comfort to
the homeless and encouraging soldiers
and others engaged in salvage and res
cue work.
Charitable organizations are co-orer-
ating with the authorities in. throwing
open their buildings and in succoring
reiugees. several convents and a
number of public buildings have been
equipped with military cota and bed
ding and transformed into hospitals.
The Red Cross is performing splendid
services in distributing food and cloth
ing. Nevertheless, numerous instan
cea are cited of women and children
who had refused to leave their homes
in the submerged districts, shrieking
from tbelr windows lor bread.
The number of refugees arriving
here is enormous, Charenton alone
sending in 88,000, who had got there
from Calais and other afflicted points.
The family of M. Barthou, ex-min
later of public works, whose home in
the Avenue d'Antun is Burrounded.
was taken out on the backs of soldiers
and in boats.
A large number of schools are closed
and the municipality is considering the
advisability of closing all. Practically
all of the flooded suburban towns about
Paris tonight are without light and
several are without water. Their in
habitants are leaving. - -
The chamber of deputies held a sit
ting today in the water-beleaguered
falais Bourbon, believing that an ad'
journment or a transfer of their activ
ities to Versailles, which had been
suggested, would only serve to in
crease the popular panic. Parliament
today voted a bill extending business
notes one month.
Communication with England; Hoi
land, Denmark, and Austria and many
cities and towns in France is complete
ly cut off. The telephone baa been
practically abandoned in Paris. New
districts are being flooded constantly
and the people are vacating blocks of
buildings.
Several hospitals where sick refu
gees were taken are in a dreadful
plight, the water having quenched fires
in the furnaces.
Four hundred patients were hurried
ly removed in ambulances from the
Hospital de la Salpetriere and the Hos
pital Boucicault. Tbelr rescue was
dramatic and timely. The hospital
was isolated snd a new rush of water
threatened to level it The tireless
prefect of police, M. Lepine, sum'
moned ambulances and boats and addi
tional police and soldiers.
