der arrest by a U. S. marshal, Wed
nesday, tie nature of the charge be

AWAY THURSDAY.
C. R. Thornton, who jell from a
scaffold on -the Lltoh building to the
sidewalk, alighting on his head, about
2 o'clock (Monday afternoon, died at
the same hour Thursday attternoon
without ever regaining consciousness,
fust a .tittle while before he passed
away he opened his eyes and glanced
at the weeping friends hut there was
no sign of recognition. Brief ser
vices were held ini the home at 7
o'clock Friday morning, Rev. C. B.
Trueblood officiating. The remains
were taken to La Grande Friday,
where the (funeral was held, Rev. H.
E. McLeod preaching the sermoti.
Mrs. Thornton, her mother, Mts. Har
rison, a friend, Mrs. Leigh ton. and
a nephew of the deceased, Perry
Thornton, all of La Grande, accom
panied the body from here.
Calvin R. Thornton was born near
Derter, Iowa, Feb. 16, 1859. He went
to Kansas a.t the age of 25 and later
moved to Weiser, Ida., where he was
in the Hrug business, and in. 18SG
came to La Grande. He was married
to IMlss Para Farrls, Feb. 1, 1803.
and they spent the 'first year of their
married life In this county, on Trout
creek, 12 miles north of this city.
They have since 'resided in La
Grande except the last few months
they lived here, where he was super
intending the erection of the court
house and the new Lltch building,
both of which he designed. His
plana were also used for the Enter
prise Hotel, Burnaugh & Mayfield's
wareroom, the remodeling of the E.
M. & M. Htore, Dr. Ault's residence
and the fine new home of J. H.
Dobbin on 'Prairie Creek.-
Besides his widow, adopted son and
daughter, he is survived by his aged
parents, on brother and one sister
at Earlham, la., a brother at Nevada,
Mo., and a sister at West Branch,
la. Charles McReynolds of this city,
and Mrs. S. R. Haworth of La Grande
are cousins of Mr. Thornton.
The deceased was brought up In
the Friends church, but he was a
member of the Methodist church at
La Grande. He was a man- of quiet
disposition and one had to be well ac
quainted with him to appreciate his
sterling character. He was a mem
ber of the W. O. W.

Livestock Exchange at the Portland
yards, Tuesday, and brought big
prices at the sale the following day.
Fourth best car steers shipped by
E. L. Wiley of Wallowa, averaged
193 pounds, sold to Union Meat com
pany at Cc pound, or $77.58 per head.
Second best steer shipped by E. L.
Wiley pf Wai:owa, weighed 1600
pounds, and sold to M. J. Gill at 10
cents a pound, or $168 Cor the animal
Best car speyed heifers, shipped by
W. I, Diahmon of Wallowa; aver
aged 1096 pounds, sold to Union Meat
company at $7.35 per hundred pounds
averaged $80.56.

R. L. Day shipped two ears of
hogs from Enterprise Saturday morn
ing. They were bought from James
Stowell, C. C. Straley, Ira Phillips,
vendriekson Bros., Joe Beach, Walt
er Applegate, Ab Wilson, S. W. and
C. F. Evans, D. W. and Chas. Kuhn
of Paradise, John Curry df Appleton,
J. A. iEggleson, Elmer Kooch and S.
H. Bonner of the valley.
Seven cars of hogs and cattle were
shipped from Wallowa, Saturday.

AGED WOMAN DIES.
iMrs. Rebecca Wrlght4 wife of Laz
arus Wright, and familiarly known
to her many friends as "Aunt Becky,"
died at her home In the Chesnimnus
country, Wednesday, of pneumonia.
She was 71 years of age, and leaves
' no children. The burial was in En
j terprise cemetery, . Friday afternoon,
service at the grave being conduct
ed by Rev. W. P. Samma.
