FOR REBATE.
The Railroad Commissioners of Ore
goa have sent a letter to the news
papers cif the state urging holders
of receipted freight bills for a'J
freight shipped since May 12, 1908,
between Portland and points east of
The Dalles, to hold the same until
the final adjudication of the commis
sion's order reducing class rates
oae-seventh. The railroad company
has a bond ,for $50,000 up and those
receipted freight blM may mean
money some day. Following is the
letter:
Salem, Dec 4 To the Editor:
On April 28, 1908, an order was mode
by this commission prescribing a re
duction of approximately one-seventh
in the class rates applicable In either
direction on Intrastate shipments be
tween Portland and points east of
The Dalles on the line of the Oregon
Railroad & Navigation company.
The order was made to become effec
tive . May 12, 1908. Before ,the order
became eflfctlve the railroad company
brought its bill of complaint in h
United' States circuit court for the
district of Oregon, to set aside the
order of the commission and to per
petually enjoin the members of the
commission and the attorney general
from enforcing any of the penalties
or remedies provided by the railroad
commission act. A restraining order
waa issued and the railroad company
gave bond in the sum of $50,000 for
the repayment of the excess charges
between those ordered ,by the com
mission and the existing rates. The

Topped Hog Market Again.
Combes & Ho'chklss of this cdty,
repeated the trick, Saturday, of
breaking the record in the Portland
market for hogs. They sold 88 pork
ers averaging 243 pounds at $3.60 a
hundred, the highest price paid this
season.- The Omaha market on the
same day touched high water mark
for it at $8.45 or 15 cents lower than
Portland.

from Paradise the latter part of last
week and sold the lot, 32 head, to
local dealers for a big price.

The contract for building the 175
foot span steel bridge across the
Grande Ronde river at Troy was
Jet, Saturday,' by the county oourt to
the Columbia Bridge company of
Walla Walla and Portland for $7984,
this being the lowest of the three
bids submitted. The price includes
furnishing all the material, tools,
appliances, labor and the erection of
the bridge ready for travel. The
contract with the company was
drawn up ths same day by Deputy
District Attorney Dill and was ac
cepted by the company's representa
tlve, Vice President A. E. Eberhart.
.Mr. Eberhart drew the plana and
specifications- for the bridge, which
the comrt was to pay $100 for unless
the Columbia people secured ithe con
tract, in which event no charge was
to be made.
The bridge will be the largest in
the county and will rest on concrete
filled steel piers. About 50 tons of
material and tools, including '36 tons
of steel, eight tons of cement, and
four toes of tools will have to be
hauled by wagon from this city to
Troy, a distance of 47 miles. The
bridge Is to be completed ready for
traffic by August 1, 1910.
The other two bidders were the
International Contract company of
Seattle, represented by R. X. Bas
ford, $8174, and Fitzgerald & Camp
bell of La Grande, $10895. Mr. Fitz
gerald, who ds proprietor of the La
Grande Iron Works, was here at the
opening of the bids.
Buy North Country Farms.
J. M. Reed of Davis county, Mis
souri, and brother-in-law, Marlon
Harris, cif Alder Slope, have been
looking over land in this section,
says the Flora Joarnal. Mr. Reed
has purchased the J. E. Matthew
farm for a consideration of $2500.
Mr. Harris bought the O, C. Gowey
farm for $3500 and the Robinson
farm of F. S. Johnson for $2400.
HORSES SELL HIGH.
The Calvin Smith horse sale in
Baker Bros.'s corral Saturday was
well amended and the bidding was
brisk. As hlgih as $200 was paid for
young Percheron fillies. Twenty
three horses dn all were sold, includ
ing a number of yearlings, and the
average price w&3 over $100.
