The centenary of the first Ameri
can settlement on the Pacific coast
will be , celebrated by Astoria in
1911 and plans for the affair are al
ready being discussed. Descendants
of John Jacob Astor will be asked
to Join in the commemoration of the
planting of the first American city
on the Pacific coast by the founder
of that famous family. The story
of the founding of Astoria is told in
Washington Irvlng's book of that
name.

The Arlington Record reports that
freight for points on the "Washing
ton side of the river coming up on
the Open River Transportation Com
pany's boats will 'be stored free of
charge, and that teams coming for
such freight wH be ferried across
the Columbia free. Every lot In Ar
lington is worth more because the
people are enterprising and sensible
on such matters.

Oregon's chief city Is going ahead

land Is growing because the state
at large is prosperous and is con
stantly Increasing its wealth. Plans
to beautify the city by following a
comprehensive scheme of city build
ing are now receiving a great deal
of attention. Mayor Simon announces
that during the coming year 90 miles
of hard surface pavement will be put
down, making the streets of the me
tropolis equal, If not superior, to any
other city in the We3t. At present
Portland has a total of 60 miles of
hard surface pavements.

H. Lambert, was widely known as the
