THE ENTERING WEDGE.
From present indications the Port
land Oregonian and the old machln
politicians of the Republican partj
of Oregon will hold a convention, un
ler the; name of an "assembly," nex.
year to try and decide upon the can
lidates they -will support Cor stati
and congressional offices.
It will be a fatuous proceeding aF
far as party good is concerned. The
Oregonian has .a'ready served notice
It is not a Republican' .newspaper
therefore it has no business in t
convention or ' assembly of that
party.
The old gangsters " who are fore
mo3t in this so-called "assembly'' bus
iness are, most of. them, the same
gang that helped to defeat Cake foi
senator. They are the rule or ruin
follows and any party Is better of)
with them? out of it.
It doesn't take very much perspl
acity to see this "assembly," fath
?red and promoted by enemies of tht,
.lirect primary, i3 but an entering
vedge by which It Is hoped to split
lie supporters of people rule and
nullify - the primary by indirect
means, knowing they could not
overthrow it by open battle.
Peary's "proof" that Dr. Cook die
lot) reach the North Pole Is no prooi
it all. It would not be- even admls
iible evidence In a court. Peary has
proved hluiBelf of a low, envious
disposition and one who would stoor
to anything In his own Interest, not
caring whether the truth was brought
-it I or not.
itate which had adopted that policy
vould "show it up as a delusion and
snare."
But a $3,000,000 failure in Okla
homa last week demonstrates that
the new law does hold water. No
sooner . was insolvency discovered
ban the state bank examiner took
harge and quietly began to pay out
he depositors in full.
There was no excitement, no riots
o worry, no suffering, no record of
suicide.
The bank examiner just took
harge and paid off the depositors
.s they presented themselves.
Of course that wasn't satisfactory
o everybody. There were some peo-
ile who objected to the plan merely
ecause it was working so well. So
aese people got out a federal in
unction restraining the state offic
al from complying with the state
aw,
It happened that there was a
Dophole in the injunction and that
. public servant found Jt and con'
inued his work until every creditor
as satisfied.
Of course the carping critics will
lot admit that the scheme is a sue
v, not yet.
"Wait till a lot of the banks fall,"
hey say.
As a matter of fact the conditions
-even should the failure of a lot of
anks at the same time, a colnci
ence that can hardly be considered
s a logicat contingency the condi
ion of the depositors would not be
ny worse than with no guaranty at
all.
But what's the U3e of considering
uch a fatuous speculation? It is
usti about as useful as that old argu-
lent about the number of angels
ho could stand on the point of a
eedle, by which Duns Scotlus gave
s the legacy of his name as a "pat'
ddltlon to our language.
Watch out! The Indians, the
goodubones and o'.her signs and won
ders are predicting a long, hard
vlntor. Lot it come. This county
i well fixed for even one of the
"old-fashioned" vaiiety.
BANK; GUARANTY WINS.
From the Baker City Democrat.
It seems pretty evident now that
hose who opposed the bank deposits
guaranty plan which was a part of
ho Democratic platform in the last
i i!ii)n:i campaign will have to hunt
"p new arguments with which to
combat that policy should it ever
ocome an issue in the future.
Up to within the last week or so
they cited that while the scheme
vvould no doubt work all right In the
case of small failures, the failure of
