"Nearly ever " wild beast that I ever

this discovery quite accidentally. Once,
when I was in tmerlea with this
show, one of the visitors, who was
smoking a cigar, p lffed some of the

a real riot, but Instead at that the Hon,
after giving a couple (f sneezes, moved
quietly up to the bars- and raised his
nose snlffingly as if a (king for a sec

on all sorts of wild animals since, and
I have found that ruost of them enjoy
thoroughly a big sniff of tobacco. We
bad a bear here once that used to rub
bis nose and back against the bars
of his cage, Just like a cat asking to be
stroked, whenever any one smoking a

Tha Emperor's Ordarly.
Frenchmen of every rank and class
dearly love titles. The manager of a
Paris insurance company was decorat
ed with the Legion of Honor a few
days ago, and the clerks In the em
ploy t)f the company presented him
with a piece of plate to which their
visiting cards were attached. On look
ing over tbte be was a good deal puz
zled and amused by the visiting card
of the office "boy," an old soldier
from the Invalided, who was employed
to open the office doors from 9 to 4.
Under the man's name was the title
"the emperor's orderly." He sent
for the old soldier, who stumped In
and saluted.
"Of what emperor are ycu the order
ly, and how?" be asked. The old In
valids drew himself up to attention.
"I am the orderly of the emperor,"
he said, "Napoleon, le Petit Corporal."
"But be Is dead, ne bas been dead
some time," answered the puzzled
manager.
"I dust his tomb for bim," growled
tha old soldier. Loudon Express.
No Morals In Dreamland.
If, as many writers have suggested,
It is the soul itself that guides the Im
agery of dreams, how are we to ex
plain the fact that in this chaos of
Ideas and feelings there Is so little dis
tinction between right and wrong that
when dreaming we commit acts for
which we should weep tears of blood
were tbey as real as they seem to be.
As Professor Hoffman has said, "The
familiar check of wa king hours, 'I
must pot do It because it would be un
just or unkind,' never once seems to
arrest us In the satisfaction of any
wblm which may blow about our way
ward fancies."
From all of which we must conclude
that the dream realm is a world thut Is
entirely oblivious to any moral sense
and that, though It may be true that a
troubled conscience may produce or
affect our dreams, the dreams them
selves are never burdened with a con
science. Bohemian Magazine.

Knew Hit Name.
The man was Jealous, Insanely Jeal

gave him no cause.
Girls never do.
He knew the name of the man ha

He did not tell her so, however, but

At the same time, when this story
opens, they were having an emotional
tussle.
"Oh, George," she said, "what Is the
matter?"-
"You know well enough," he replied
bitterly.
"I assure you I do not," she Mislsted.
"But you do, and you do nothing to
make our life sweeter."
"Tell me what I should do," she
pleaded, for, though she might be
frisky with George, she did not wish to
lose her grip on him entirely.
"Oh, George, George, why are you
not frank with me?" she pleaded again.
George's face became ashen gray at
ber fateful words,
"That is it!" he hissed, the awful fire
of Jealousy blazing lu bis eyes. "That
Is It, Miss Smlthklns. If I were Frank
with you Instead of George, you'd be
all right."
The girl would have replied, but she
could not Her tongue clave to the

An Artist's Muataoha.
The mustache was not viewed with
favor in England In the middle of the
last century. An anecdote is told of
the late Thomas Cooper, the English
artist, to Illustrate. He was brought
before a magistrate In 1846 on soin
minor charge and was described In
the police report as being "fashion
ably dressed, with large mustaches.''
The Art Journal of the date, comment
ing on It, said that "no member of the
Royal academy perpetrates the atroc
ity of mustaches, a most un-English
affectation." Mr. Cooper became a
member of the academy a few years
later.

Some towns on the Italian side of
the Swiss Alps are noted for the great
number of sunny days. Carabletta

cause of this liberal amount of sun
shine the percentage of old people Is
exceptionally high In the canton of
Tessln, forty-four per thousand being
over seventy years old and ten per
