vida attention all over the Northwest

.ast year and the attractions offered
ire far ahead of last season.
The exhibition of livestock 1 1
valued at more than $1,000,000 and
Is 23 per cent larger than last year.
The State Fair at Salem exhibits of
Ivestock were brought to Portland
and numerous attractions have been
idded that will make the week's
show a notable o ie. Stock entries
lave been made lrom the Central and
Eastern states that have never been
shown west of Chicago and Denver.
Nearly 600 harness horses will con
test for the $2 'i.OOO in race purses
this week. Livestock entries will
bring close to 3,000 head of horses,
cattle, sheep, Aiie and goats here.
Railroads serving this territory
are preparing estimates of travel
during the Colonist period, September
15 to October 15. They expect no
less than 60,000 new settlers for
the Pacific Northwest during the 30
days the low oieway rates are In
effect. Extra eq lament Is being as
terabled by the various lines to
handle the heavy traffic expected
and the passenger agents balievd
they wl 1 have a 1 they can do to
care for the flood of new-comers.
Inquiry at Eastern ticket offices is
reported to be wide and the west
bound trains bearing the vanguard of
this great colonist movement are
heavily loaded. During this week the
travel Is expected to be at its height
and will undoubtedly be heavy.
Coos Biy Is going to deepen its
own haibor channel without waiting
for government ai 1. - The Port of
Coos Bay Is preparing for the sale
of bonds amounting to $500,000. The

at the Coos Bay ports accessible at
all times for vesslei of deep draught.
Proposals' for the bonds have been
aaked and will be received at the
First Natonal Tank, North Bead,

Portland's union stock yards in
the peninsula packing house district
were opened during the past week
and now this city, which is to be
the livestock center of the North
west, offers the most modern and
complete stockyards In the country.
Hundreds of business men of the
city attended the opening, and all
were forced to admire the perfect
arrangements for handling livestock
that have been provided. The big
union yards will have a strong In
fluence In developing the livestock
Industry throughout this territory.
According to the records of the
Government FoieJtry Sen Ice and
1 he State Board of Foretsry, Oreson,
has been remarkably fortunate this
summer in e3ca in? the usual heivy
to'.l taken by forast fires. The sea
son has be3n marked by less destruc
tion of timber than any In the pa3t
decade. FIre3 t :1s year have bsjn
few and widely separated while loss
es have been small. This U thought
to be partly due o an aroused pabilj
nterest In preve itlng forest fins
and a largely Increased force of fire
wardens throughout the forests this
season.
