They Knew the Pole.
Some yenrs ago when Dr. Nansen
1 visited Leeds on his return from the
polnr regions he was welcomed by a
large erowd of spectators, who cheer
ed vociferously. Two of the most ar
dent admirers of Nansen were a cou
ple of old men, who kept shouting and
waving their sticks. When the cele
brated explorer had passed, Immedi
ately following In the wnke of the
carriage came a wagon dragpod by
three horses, bearing a long Iron pole,
which belonged to the electric tram
ways company.
Directly the old men saw It the fol
lowing conversation took place:
"Well, I'll be blowed! Sltha, Bill,
lie's brout the pole back wl' him!" said
one.
"Aye," said the other admirer of
Nansen, "uud we t' only two 'at's no

The (Illusion of Night
I sometimes fancy that every great
city must have been built by night
At least It is only at night that every
part of a great city is great. All archi
tecture Is great architecture after sun
set. Perhaps architecture is really a
nocturnal art. like the art of fireworks
At least I think many people of those'
nobler trades that work by night (Jour
nalist, policemen, burglars, coffee stall
keepers and such mistaken enthusiasts
as refuse to go home till .morning)
must often hare stood admiring some
black bulk of building with a crown of
battlements or a creet of spires and
then burst into tears at daybreak to
discover that it was only a haberdash.

The Emperor's Orderly.
Frenchmen of every rank and class
dearly love titles. The manager of a
Paris insurance company was decorat
ed with the Legion of Honor a few
days ago, and the clerks In the em
ploy of the company presented him
with a piece of plate to which their
visiting cards were attached. On look
ing over thee he waa a good deal puz
rled and amused by the visiting card
of the office "boy," an old soldier
from the Invalldes, who was employed
to open the office doors from 0 to 4.
Dnder the man's name was the title
"the emperor's orderly." He sent
for the old soldier, who stumped in
and saluted.
"Of what emperor are you the order
ly, and bow?" he asked. The old In
vallde drew himself up to attention.
"I am the orderly of the emperor,"
he said, "Napoleon, le Petit Corporal."
"But he Is dead. He bas been dead
some time," answered the pusuled
manager.
"I dust his tomb for him," growled
the old soldier. London Expresa.
No Moral In Dreamland.
If, as tunny writers have suggested,
It Is the soul itself that guides the Im
agery of dreams, bow are we to ex
plain the fact that in this chaos of
Ideas and feelings there is so little dis
tinction between right and wrong that
when dreaming we commit acta for
which we should weep tears of blood
were they as real as they seem to be.
As Professor Hoffman has said,. "The
familiar check of waking hours, 'I
must not do It because it would be un
just or unkind,' never once seems to
arrest us In the satisfaction of any
whim which may blow about our way
ward fancies." :
From all of which we must conclude
that the dream realm Is a world thut Is
entirely oblivious to any moral sense
and that, though it may be true that a
troubled conscience may produce or
affect our dreams, the dreams them
selves are never burdened with a con
science. Bohemian Magazine.
