CHEMICAL ENGINE '

Fire caused by a defective flue
over the kitchen in the home of W.
R. Holmes, Thursday morning had
a good start when first seen by Mrs.
Holmes, burning through the ceil

the house by the time the alarm
was given and the hose cart and
chemical arrived, but the city chem
ical and a large hand chemical of
Ratcliff's soon smothered the flames.
Hose connected with the nearest
hydrant failed to reach the house,
and a bucket brigade was formed,
but would have been of no avail but

Thsre was considerable damage
done by the flames, le38 than $200
worth, and no insurance. All the fur
