tions that Is being carried on by the
forest service and the bureau of
plant Industry acting In co-operation.
During the past month Mr. Jardlne
has visited lambing camps . on the
deserts of Arizona. The season , this
far has bean an excellent one there
most of the shearing is over and
the wool market el for a good price,
some of it as hijh as 22 cents a
pound. The desert lambing will be
over by March 20 and sheep meD
expect to reach between 90 and 100
per cent lamb crop. . Mr. Jardlne
will go soon to the lambing camps
on Snake river, for the purpof-e of
continuing a comparative of sheep
lambing on outside range, and lamb
ing under the pasturage system. La
ter in the season, he will conduct the
experimental investigations at the
coyote-proof pasture on the Chesnim
pus section of the Wallowa forest.

The Palmer. Croisott and Grande
'Ronde companies, owners of' big
tracts of timber in this county, who
appealed to the circuit court the
$1000 assessment per quarter made
I by ex-Asse38or Pace and confirmed
by the equalization board, have paid
their taxes in full without protest,
which action is taken to mean the
suits will probably be dropped.
Monday was the la3t day on which
the 3 per cent- raba'e was given for
prepayment of taxes. Deputy Sher
iff Crow says the number of re
ceipts to this date is about the
same as last yeir. Sheriff Marvin
and Deputy Crow are digging into
the work from early morning till
dark keeping up with the payments.
No penalty is added if hair your tax
is paid on or before Monday. April
6. The sheriff has made one turn
over of $13,214.09 to Treasurer Bell.

Of City Council
Additional Street Lamps Ordered
Johnson Reimbursed for Cost
of Bridge.
At' the regular mid-monthly meet
ing of the council Monday night, a
street light was ordered placed at
the northwest corner of Greenwood
and West Flwt straet, Ted Johnson
was reimbursed for the cost of a
bridge,, he built two years ago on
the street near his' home, and two
culverts were ordered In across the
'branch at the west end of Main
street and on Holmes street, Daniel
Boyd, who owns adjoining property,
offering to pay for pulling of the
brush and grading of approaches to
and betwean the culverts.
H. E. Merryman asked whether his
offer of a free site for a reservoir
would be accepted, but the council
eould not tell him definitely until
the arrival of Mr. Lowry, the engi
neer for the American L. & W. com
pany, who ha3 the water works "con
tract. He Is expected soon.
The mayor wa3 Instructed to post
a warning notice forbidding persons
